For thousands of years, people from the East to the West regard sex with the following:

1. Only married couple can have sex. Sex in this context is honorable and sacred.

Sex is not allowed during "courting".

2. Prostitution existed but whoever engaged in it is viewed in bad lights.

3. Adultery is frowned upon.

I'm not teaching history. Rather I'm bringing out how complicated relationship has become since the last 100 years compared to the last 2000 years.

And yes, if you're observant, you'll realise that sex complicates modern relationships.

To answer your question, my Opinion is friends don't have sex. Entering a romantic relationship shouldn't involve sex. Perhaps sex is OK when engaged. Thereafter, in marriage, sex should be a way of life. (Definitely not what is accepted since Y2k.)

If you're going on dates it means you're dating, but it doesn't mean that person is your boyfriend. A hook-up doesn't generally entail dates, but going on dates at all doesn't indicate a committed relationship (aka boyfriend/girlfriend), that's just sort of the casual dating/situationship zone.

Difference is how you spend your time outside of sex and what your intentions are.
