If you are in a relationship, but not boyfriend and girlfriend what do you call the other person since the title is not boyfriend or girlfriend?

I was told by this person that the boyfriend and girlfriend title is used on when he/she sees marriage in the future with the other person. Does anyone else share this opinion, or has heard of this before?

Well being boyfriend and girlfriend is a type of relationship but there are others like sexfriend etc.. so if you are in a relationship you are not necessarily boyfriend and girlfriend

No, they're both the same thing, but a rel can be casual or serious, boyfriend and girlfriend is same as partners, and romantic partners are people who are in a relationship.

Sounds like splitting hairs over labels. Romantic, exclusive relationship is girlfriend/boyfriend material, but with all the changing gender names I can see a potential issue.
