One time a person asked me if I would consider dating a man from this particular ancestral group

I said yes to them but how I truly feel is no.

I just said yes because I was afraid somebody might call me a racist or shallow and I just wanted to avoid the possible controversy.

You can usually tell what a person ancestral background is by the physical appearance. It’s just those men from this particular ethnic group generally don’t have looks I find attractive.

It's completely fine to have preferences. You're allowed to have them and voice them. I myself prefer Caucasian and latina women as a very mixed Caribbean guy.

Just be yourself. If they're offended, that's their problem. You're not obligated to be attracted to anyone.

Does it make you a coward for being afraid to voice it? A little bit, yes. But it also shows that you're kind and empathetic. However, not voicing your honest opinions can come with some pretty bad consequences. You become a people pleaser that can't say no to others in fear of being judged negatively by them.

Yes. But no more than a majority of people out there. Most people are cowards. Most people lie. The world is built on lies. I'm not suggesting it's OK to lie. Or that you should lie. I'm just saying your actions are normal. I always assume I woman is lying AT LEAST 50% of the time she opens her mouth. It's pretty safe assumption.
