Why would a guy I’ve been talking to + been on one date with say this?

We were supposed to go on a second date but he got sick and had to go back into work. He messages me & says he wishes he was kissing up on me then when I confront him about how I feel like the vibe has changed & if he doesn’t want to go out again to just let me know upfront, he ignores me. If he wasn’t feeling it why would he continue to send me messages like that (he’s 30 by the way) instead of just being honest? He was able to own up to how his communication had been poor the last few days, and he said it was his fault and he would be better, so why can’t he own up to my direct questions when I ask?
