Do you DM people or do you wait until they DM you?

I find that my DM conversations always go better for me if someone else DMs me first. Is that true for you too?

I did DM one person first who requested help with something in a Question that was super simple for me to answer. Other than that I have first received before responding and I rarely check so sometimes it has taken me a week or more to reply.
