What does it mean when a guy says this?

I've been talking to him for a few months. He seemed fine last time I talked to him.

“hey Melissa, I took the rest of the week off work. I have been isolating myself, I’m not really doing too good mentally to be honest with you. I just wanted to let you know so you don’t think I’m ignoring you.”

I would think he's having a bit of a breakdown and probably needs some space to himself, I think if he had intended to cut off communication he would not have included that last sentence in his message.

Have you met him? Or has the communication purely been over messaging? It's pretty easy to conceal one's emotions and frame of mind over text hence why he could've come off as seemingly fine from your perspective. It's possible that he decided reveal it to you now because it has reached a tipping point resulting in his isolation.

However, it is also possible that he's trying to cut off communication by using mental health as an excuse. It's obviously a scummy method of doing it but perhaps he doesn't want to face that situation and wishes to gradually decrease the frequency of communication until it ceases eventually.

It's hard to ascertain his intentions though.
