2.1K opinions shared on Dating topic. I spent 5 minutes replaying any compliments I could remember in my mind
And it saddens me to say: I don’t have truly great ones
Most people dismiss my successes or even my characteristics as an expected outcome
When I told my mom I’m graduating as top of my class in engineering school her answer was “well of course, we always knew how smart you are”
Everyone else said the same thing more or less
Except for me these things aren’t so straightforward of obvious. I’m not on some destined path to success, I work really hard for the little bit I have.
I know some people who get standing ovations for every minor effort they make
I always wonder why people feel the need to cheer them on
And somehow be dismissive of me31 Reply- 2 mo
You have broken patterns,
Conquered new lands,
You don't need the spotlight because you are the spotlight,
You don't need a throne because you are the throne,
And have walked further than most and one day the world will see the greatness I see in you.

I once taught a lesson in my first week at a high school after the first time with this group of 16 year old kids about the greenhouse effect and global warming and without pause they gave me a round of applause. That was a recognition of my knowledge and delivery passion that's stuck with me for something 20 years ago that I had not even prepared for.

2 moMost of the compliments I get are on my eyes. Although I'm used to it, I still appreciate it every time. But the things we tend to value the most are what we put the most effort into. I look up a lot of stuff when I'm curious about something, so when someone compliments my knowledge about a lot of things, I'm flattered and really appreciative of it. Same as when someone compliments my coordination, as I've worked on my athleticism my entire life, though more passively as of late.
I also really appreciate when people say I have a good sense of aesthetic. I think I have a good eye for what looks good and my exes have always told me they trust my judgment in what they should wear.10 Reply
1 moIt’s hard to say but the best kind are ones from the heart not generic but those that are oddly specific (without being weird obviously) or that feel genuine.

That's a terrible compliment to give someone.
3.6K opinions shared on Dating topic. Compliments are actually mostly fake and seldom reflect the true opinion of the giver. Mainly women are always victims of such compliments that solely apply to their looks, beauty, smells and the like.
I personally don't consider those "compliments" to be valuable ones because they never reflect the true opinion of the one giving them.
Thus, removing all those fake compliments that are solely given with a very specific intention, I would easily say that I have never received a compliment.
I have yet to find a single person that would compliment another girl on her intellectual achievement for example. This is simply something that men don't want to give because indirectly it puts them in an inferior position to have to admit that a woman can be intellectually superior to them.

2 moMost compliments I get are probably sincere but not any Earth shattering insight into who I am. They usually fall into categories like looks, clothes, grooming, confidence. Easily observable stuff from people looking to start a conversation or keep one going.
Part of that is almost certainly my fault. I'm an introvert and I don't generally give people much insight into who I am or what makes me tick. Or especially my background.
I guess the greatest compliment I've ever received from a lot of people is the comment that I should have been a teacher. As an chemical engineer once told me... "you have a talent for taking very complex ideas and situations and explaining them in a way other people can understand them". That's more or less what I've gotten from people my entire adult life.
10 Reply It was 9 years ago. I was a teacher at a high school. It was November 24 teachers' day (November 24 is celebrated as teachers' day in Turkey) I was sitting in the teacher's room and a some students came in the teachers' room and gave me a paper. They asked me to read the paper and then they left. I started reading. It was about how they love me, I wasn't their teacher previous year. The paper also contained sentences like, "We needed a teacher like you. You came just when we needed you." Elementary and middle school students may automatically like their teachers, but it's difficult to make high school students like you. They were last grade students of the high school so their emotions about me were more important. This gift had no monetary value, but its sentimental value was immeasurable. It made me very happy and I will never forget that moment.

"Why aren't you married?" This is before I was married but asked in the sense of "How is it possible that you aren't already married? You're such a great guy."
"Why isn't every guy like you?" Same woman said that.

One said it after they left money at my house and it was still there months later. I forget when the other said that.

A guy friend of mine said I was one of his top 3 fave drummers right behind Charlie Watts. I guess that means a lot to HIM but, I doubt Charlie could play his way out of a wet paper bag with large holes in it and brightly lit signs pointing, "THIS WAY OUT!"20 Reply
