A lot of religious groups live like that, I tried adding a bible study connection to facebook and he told me he does not accept opposite gender friends on social media unless its a fiancé or wife or family member.

Some of that sounds great, but the friends thing is too restrictive. I would definitely cut off any male friends who hit on me, and I would expect him to do the same with female friends, but restricting friend gender is going a little too far.
