His behavior indicates that was a polite fiction. This is very common social lubrication. My wife and I just attended a very bad organ recital, but if we were asked by one of the organizers, we would have given polite if not enthusiastic approval.

That's dating -- usually both people know there's no future, but occasionally one party would like a second date while the other would not. When I don't want a second date, I just politely say so: "thanks, it was nice to meet, but I don't think it would work". This is nicer than ghosting, but if there's no indication of interest for a couple of days after a date, that says the same thing.
