What does it mean when a guy ended things he don’t feel the romantic spark needed for long-term connection?

Yes we went on a date and kept talking. And no we didn’t hook up.
We were in the process of going on a second date soon… but I noticed his delayed responses despite our conversations are always warm and flirty.. so I brought it up honestly that it’s hard to continue without more communication and what I do want is building a genuine connection and for potentially long-term. I told him I’m just not sure about him if he genuinely likes me and his intention towards me, but I said yeah I want someone who can make more time to get to know me and wants me.. even if it’s small check ins and stuff…

But yeah essentially said this and how he didn’t wanna force himself either nor wanna lead me on… wished me all the best and how I deserve someone who can match my level of effort, communication, and time…

I’m honestly very disappointed and sad because he actually seemed like a really good guy and aligned in values sigh

I just wonder does he just not feel strong emotions for me? Not that physically into me? Or truth is there’s just someone else he likes more?

Im also now wondering did I made a mistake for bringing this up too soon and should’ve wait on our second date to see if our romantic spark was really there? Even though I liked him and saw potential.. I also wasn’t sure if we 100% had it bc it was also early for me and still forming…
