Was my coworker serious about a date, or just joking around?

I need some outside opinions because I honestly don’t know how to take this situation.

There’s a guy I see at work that I’ve gotten along with for a while. We joke around, have good conversations, and he’s always been nice to me. We work on opposite sides of the building, so I don’t actually see him that often.

Last week, he asked me to dinner and brought it up a few different times that same day. I told him I would go, so I assumed he would eventually ask for my number and actually make plans.

But he never asked for my number, never asked when I was free, and never gave me an actual day, time, or restaurant.

I saw him again today, and he made another joke about the dinner But again, there was never an actual plan made.

So now I’m confused. Was he genuinely trying to ask me out and just being awkward about it, or is he just playing around/joking and never actually intended to take me out?

He's serious, but if you refuse he will pretend it was a joke instead of accepting the rejection.

It doesn't seem like he is that serious. Asking for your number is the next logical step.
