Dictionary. com says, aloof - reserved or reticent; indifferent; disinterested. While standoffish means - somewhat aloof or reserved; cold and unfriendly. I just do not understand the difference between these words, they look the same two mean.
Connotation. Aloof is neutral, distant, far away. Standoffish is negative and implies that someone is intentionally keeping themselves away from others.

The "cold and unfriendly" is the difference to me (ie, mean). Aloof is more indifferent, not cold and unfriendly.
