i work for a pool place its been 4 years i only worked during the summer i hoping to be a assistant store manager

i help customers take stuff out to the cars i stock the shelves i test peoples pool water i order parts for people

If you are "really" being a real ASM, you should be getting $15 an hour. And since NJ is 20.3 % above the US average in cost of living, they should bump that at least a buck. The thing is, other than opening and closing the shop, you are not doing ASM duties. Being a runner, stocker or water tester is NOT ASM work, so your wage is rather typical. And, I have been in your position. I worked at a Drafting and Art Supply store. In two months I was closing. In another month I was managing the Drafting department, and in a month after that, I was managing inventory for the Drafting Department directly with the Area Rep for the distributor. I got a wage bump each time.

If you have been at $12.50 since the beginning 4 years ago, I don't think a buck bump would be too much: that's only 25¢ per hour/ per year.

Have you designed any new displays? Have you proposed any "package deals" to increase your "ticket total per purchase"? Have you created a newsletter for the staff? Have you proposed any sales incentives for your SM and ASM to administer to the staff? Being brutally honest, unless you are routinely doing some things of this sort to PROVE your are ready to be a Shift Manager or an ASM, you likely won't become one.

On a side note, in New Jersey, just about anyone can get a job in an Aldi- $12.75 for stocking, $13.50 for cashier. But be forewarned - Aldi people are cross-trained to fill in in ANYwhere. ( An Aldi SM gets about $61K in NJ. )

The point I'm trying to make is that an employer would rather promote someone who is ALREADY doing things expected at the higher level than someone who is not. Perhaps in your shop promotion is simply by longevity?

If you know how much they're hiring for now, try to at least match it.
You've been there four years during summer, if you feel comfortable asking for a $1 raise, go for it. Or you can ask for more hours. Your boss seems to be giving you an opportunity to maybe push the envelope a little, just don't get greedy.
If you can give a reason/need for more money (i. e. college/buying a house) he may want to help you.

Maybe ask for $14? If you don’t get it take $13 (assuming you want to accept the new job offer).

A raise from $12.50 to $13/hr is actually a good raise. That is a 4%, which is in-line with inflation and cost of living. $15/hr sounds like a big jump from where you’re at now, especially with no increase in responsibility. If you are looking to become an assistant manager, talk to your boss about that. There may be a training program, or a way to increase your responsibilities so you can earn more while you work towards that promotion, which will come with higher pay. Good luck!
