Maybe you picked something due to high income, without any regard.
For those attending College or have already graduated, how did you decide what you wanted your degree to be?
Maybe you picked something due to high income, without any regard.
I had wanted to attend the US Naval Academy, become a naval aviator and fly an F-14 Tomcat. By law, all Naval Academy degrees are bachelor of science, mostly in engineering, so this is where I focused. Although I was nominated to the Academy, I was not appointed. Back to square one.
I considered aerospace engineering, but the US space program was slowing down and post-Vietnam, the military was being downsized. I looked at petroleum engineering, but within a year (maybe two) the bottom dropped out of the oil industry and chances of finding employment seemed dim. Time to regroup, (again).
I switched to structural engineering; a field dating back to the ancient Egyptians. I granulated with a BS in civil engineering, structural engineer, and then entered grad school. This is where I came to a fork in the road. Did I want to pursue a Master of Science in engineering, which would give me a path to a PhD? or a Master of Engineering degree, which is a terminal degree (no chance for a PhD)?
I never planned on teaching or doing research, so the there was no PhD requirement in my future. The Master of Engineering, which is a professional degree, better suited my work plans, so I headed in that direction and graduated with a Master of Engineering degree in Materials Science. It proved to be a good choice.
Whatever field you decide on, give it careful consideration, and always have a fallback plan... maybe two. Good luck.
Yeah it’s a tough decision balanced on your likes vs job market, salary etc. Tbh, most jobs will be ok with a more general degree like business or marketing. Doesn’t have to be photojournalism specific sometimes.
Have you tried looking up job requirements in the fields that you like?
I already know what I want to be, started school that way but lots of friends are having a hard time deciding. Was thinking of a new question to ask and this came to mind.
I picked my degree based on what I was interested in. I didn’t even check income or the demand for the job lol.
I’m planning on getting my degree in Child development to work as a preschool teacher. They don’t make much at all, but teachers are always in high demand.

I majored in computer science. I knew it was a field that was in high demand and paid well but I also thought that I woudl be good at it because I ran the computer at the place where I was working and I was interested in it.
I picked what I thought I should study and took extra classes I’m what I was interested in. But I’m the long run none of it matters too much so you should just study what you like.
I knew what I wanted to be.
I liked it and it was a good career
