I assumed that I passed probation because the company only starts paying for study fees once you have passed (which is what they're doing) so you cannot let someone just go if they've passed probation right?

Probationary employees can be dismissed without cause: all your boss has to do is wake up in the morning, decide that he no longer wants to see your face... and you're gone.
Passing probation is not a ticket to lifelong employment- even in a government job, it simply means you have met minimum job standards. Now your boss has to have "cause" (a reason) to dismiss you. Issues such as poor job performance are subjective. Issues such as absenteeism or tardiness are easy. Show up every day and on time and you'll likely make out okay.
