What's the point of "r" letter in British English?

There are words which start with R and some words have it in the middle. Its just like saying whats the point of having E in English since its never pronounced if a word ends in it. I'm British. I know we don't tend to pronounce the R at the end of a word unless its followed by a word commencing with a vowel. Socttish and Irish people however do pronounce it.
British English is non-rhotic. The letter "r" is not pronounced after vowels, unless it is also followed by a vowel that is what my pen pal told me

Here in the Southern US, most of us pronounce the "r" in words.
