How do you feel about homeschooling children? Pros and cons?

I think homeschooling is actually really bad for kids.
I knew a few homeschooled kids growing up, once they were introduced to the real world. Social awkwardness, tremendous difficulty with conflict resolution, often... bizarre religious/political views. No smarter than the average public schooled kid. There don't seem to be any benefits to homeschooling, parents just want to be able to turn their kids into miniature versions of themselves and end up producing people who are maddeningly unprepared for the real world.

I totally agree. I knew a girl in middle school who entered public school for the first time in seventh grade. She really struggled with fitting in and adjusting, and returned back to homeschooling by January. It's a rough experience that could have been prevented.

I wouldn't do it to my kids. Nothing scientific, but I've noticed that among the homeschooled people I know they are slightly more socially immature. Social learning is important. You miss out on that majorly if you're homeschooled, even if you have siblings. I think it's really important for young children to be with their peers frequently.

I think the best thing is to find the right school district. Budgeting is only half the battle. I'd look at overall rankings such as graduation percentage too. Diversity in schools is also ideal for young children.

After homeschooling for 2 years in home, I don't want to face that again. My social skills were totally destroyed. I had a hard time conversing with new people offline. Thankfully gag helped till some extent otherwise I would have been completely anti social my whole school life. It depends on the child but I will say homeschooling isn't the best option. For me it becomes difficult to concentrate on home compared to school. Over there I can ask my doubts to my friends only, it's fun to have classes with friends and teacher can converse more better. In home school I had a hard time to mug up all the course because internet and network were becoming really problematic in online classes. Also the notorious kids couldn't be punished and they kept annoying the class. It was like the classes were unnecessary. I didn't really understood much from class. It was all self study and whatever my parents taught me. Going to school is the best option, it works well for me at least. If there were personalized classes then also it became really boring for me. It was only beneficial for Piano classes as teacher could show keyboard (electronic piano) better. I really love going to school, I missed school food since 2 years lol.

My fear is that a lot of people are homeschooling so they can brainwash their children in a different way than they believe their children are being brainwashed at public school. The issue with this is further division and more and more blind leading the blind scenarios. Now we get flat earthers, antivaxxers, and crystal healers teaching their kids to wear tinfoil hats and how to survive the zombie apocalypse once the vaccination microchips get activated.

I was homeschooled, and I feel it was done in a healthy way. My mother didn't try to indoctrinate me with her beliefs, she just taught and tested me on the basic skills like math and science, and let me do a lot of my own research and guide my own studies. In this way, when I returned to public school, I was a year ahead of everyone my age and skipped a grade, graduating at 16. I've been a little light on some subjects, but I have been able to pick up more classes at college and fill some of those gaps. I also didn't have some of the socialization that I would have as a public school kid, but I have done fine in my life making really good friends and having romantic relationships. In fact, in some ways I feel blessed I didn't have to deal with a lot of what I hear about happens in public schools with the horrific bullying and pressure of being around a bunch of immature kids. I got to grow up with famous authors and a wider variety of adults as my guides, even though I had plenty of friends my own age at all stages of life.

During covid I homeschooled my kids and I loved it. The neighbors who children were friends with mine seeing how good we were doing asked if they could send their children over to our home for homeschooling. So I ended up schooling 5. I was so prideful when I received an email saying my children were one of the few kids who did not need to sign a fail or pass slip because their grades were great. My neighbors also received the same emails for their children. My 5 pupils all past. Now with that said my children may have done great in home school but they become socially uncomfortable, depressed and had anxiety about being out around other people. After returning to school they struggled getting use to being around so many. With time the stressed eased and they returned to their happy social selves. So what I can conclude is sure if an adult has time for homeschooling it can advance the children but they loose out on other important social skills. And keep in mind my children were not homeschooled alone. They were in a group of 5 but it was still not enough social exposure.

You have to take it kid by kid. Homeschooling can be extremely detrimental to some and for some it is how they absolutely thrive. The pros are things like absolute attention given to the kid(s), ability to tailor a program that suits your kids learning style, no external bullying (important for kids who left school for this reason), extended time for subjects/tests/studying, learning at their own pace. Cons, things like lack of socialization for some, a sheltered environment, some may not be able to handle the structure of home schooling, lack of discipline, teacher may not be sufficient.

It depends on who is doing the home schooling. For example, if I chose home schooling for future kids, I would ask my dad be the teacher since he has a degree in it and taught in a third world country for three years.

I would only consider home schooling if the person teaching has a degree in it and can actually teach the concepts necessary for real world usage. Otherwise, I would want to see the education plan the public schools have and have frequent check in with what is being taught by the teachers.

School is supposed to be for learning, but a lot of kids aren't learning jack that is pertinent to the real world until way later. These days it seems to be more catered towards indoctrination.

homeschooling can be a great option when is done right and by the right people and the greatest advantage over regular schooling is that you can actually address the student as an individual and focus all of the resources into the student which makes it for a much better education

but the downside to this is... that the student is alone, and it is missing many of the POSITIVE interactions and engagement that are very much needed to live in a society, some things are learned only true actual experience and only in the setting of a group with your peers

I think it really depends on if the child is going to benefit from it. Homeschooling takes away the opportunity to interact with other children and make new friends because they don't have social interaction but homeschooled kids can find other ways to make friends like making friends with their neighbors, through church, volunteer opportunities, etc.

Schools are always better because with specially trained teachers and staff.

Jobs are done better and more efficient when there are specialists. Trying to be everything makes no sense.

Whenever I have kids I'm homeschooling them. School is basically like free daycare at this point (my mom's a teacher and she says that a lot and it's somewhat true). And with teachers leaving and there being a shortage at this rate we all might as well homeschool our kids someway somehow.

If I lived there and had kids I would homeschool them, probably I'd get in touch with similar parents in my area so the kids could learn to socialize and work in teams too.

Mainly as it seems schooling in the US is a very dangerous endevour, shootings, drugs, certain groups targeting young kids, absolutely batshit crazy "teachers" talking about sexuality for 5 year olds etc.
This is not the environment I would want my kids to grow up.

What is the longer term implications on socialising, college grades, and also actually being allowed to form own opinions and not say parents?
i can see the need for it in some places, however how do homeschool kids carry out complex chemistry and physics practicals, learn say German, drama and acting.

I think homeschooling would be good in the way that the child can be focused on, rather than sitting in a class of 30 kids where the teacher has to spread the focus on all the students. But the main con in my eyes is the lack of social skills that child will develop from not being around other people.

I homeschool my children. The syllabuses here are very rigorous and thorough though. But I have been tutoring children since my teens. However my teaching my children has been the biggest challenge so far. Homeschooling is best if thebparentnis willing and has a clear plan for how to do it. I took ECCE course to be sure I backed up my knowledge base and did an onlinenone in Child Psychology to be sure I was able to handle it. The Master's degree I hope to do soon will be in Education.

My first question is, do you have a degree in education? If not, then do you have a master's degree in math, English, or any other subject that is taught in school? If not, then you are not equipping your child for the real world.
