When I remember my times in school, whether middle school or university, I can’t say that I’ve learned a whole a lot that I find of use in my life.
I didn’t learn about financial matters, where everyone in this country needs to be a part of because we all pay taxes, work jobs, have insurance, etc. Learning about intelligent and/or best practices when it comes to managing one’s finances is vastly relevant knowledge that is not taught in any schools to my knowledge, at least the formal/mainstream school system as most people know it.
When it comes to socialization, I found that being around other kids in the main stream school system didn’t help me become more social. I think I can attribute my sociability to other factors outside of the school system.
There’s not too much taught in mainstream schools that is of actual use to most people. A lot of the most important classes in mainstream schools can be taught without having been enrolled in these schools, and the level of proficiency one needs in these core courses is not that high or advanced.
I don’t have too much knowledge when it comes to home schooling and nor was I home schooled. I’m not necessarily for home schooling, rather, pointing at some potential issues & concerns regarding the mainstream school system.
What are your thoughts & feelings on home schooling?
I can understand homeschooling in some places, however the kids are really at the mercy of their parents. Have good well educated parents that can teach maths and advance maths, physics, chemistry and get a kid ready to go to college / university for a degree course in applied maths, chemistry, engineering etc, then yeah it works.
The thing is I very much doubt that, there are some major things school teach, some of it is shit and it’s like why do we need to learn this… you don’t, as it’s about developing your mind to improve its capacity to learn.
Time will tell with the US and it’s home schooling, the numbers now are crazy and I think will have a long term impact.

The long term impact is what’s important, the west have been responsible for pretty much all of modern advances in all areas, this includes the US. what will be the impact of making religion more of a reason to homeschool than maths, sciences. i know even my basic comprehensive had very good engineering, science workshops and labs, practical is equally important as the book learning, applying what you learn in the class room.
Also there is a thing called the ‘school of hard knocks’, yes it’s shit, however you learn at a young age to socialise with kids who are psychopaths and bullies, you learn to spot the signs.
The various colleges in the US will be the ones who first feel this huge increase in home schooling, will be interesting to see if the subjects and career choices change to reflect this.
I won’t knock it, however I know how lazy and unprepared parents were in the UK over lockdown to pretty much homeschool their kids.
-They don't teach how ho fix a car or buy a house, but heaven help you if you think you'll escape without knowing polynomials. Gotta stay ahead of the Russians in the space ra- uh-oh.
-They don't teach about the Labor wars and the importange of supporting union businesses, but you'll damn sure know when the Treaty of Ghent was signed. It's not like a major business will arise online that coutine engages in worker treatment that would embarrass Lee Iaccoca or anyth- oops.
-You'll get nothing on the dangers of groupthink, mob mentality or fad diets, but you'll nure as hell get your mandatory 20 minutes of exercise after an attendance-taking nhat's always perfect, because no one can hear the called names in a gym, so somebody always says"here!" on the off-chance it's them.
Thing is, in grade school you learn to coexist with others. In university you learn to accept people different than you.
I went to a tiny Christian school and we would do competitions with the local homeschool organization... They were always INCREDIBLY socially awkward... It doesn't matter WHAT they know if they can't relate to people because at the end of the day, it's. WHO you know. (That way at the pearly gates too I hear)
That said, they did a number on me too... Convinced me that being LGBT made me evil, convinced me that the world was scary, and the absolute worst thing they did was teach me that atheists are immoral because according to them, you couldn't have morality without God. That last one cost me a very special relationship. Even once I learned better, and apologized, and despite her loving me and being VERY attracted to me, to this day we have 0 chance of picking up where we left off 15 years ago... We are still really good friends, though. (To the extent everyone thought we were dating in university)
If an environment that is that restrictive can brainwash someone like they did me, imagine what it's like when the people. teaching you that crap are the ONLY source of interaction... Homeschooling is just too ripe for gaslighting to the extreme. That's why it's popular with cults like JH.
I never researched this topic that you are discussing but my theory is the government does not hire teachers to instruct you on these things, cause they want you to teach yourself these things, like when I was a teenager, my social strategy was to monitor my appearance 24/7 and make sure I always looked fashionable and sophisticated and serious and I had to have perfect posture and pose at all times. Now after my religious awakening, my strategy is to be so honest and psychologically relevant and soothing that people open up to me because I make them feel comfortable and I win friends by kindness and not by fashionable clothes or dress shoes or low calorie diets the way that I did in high school, I think they don’t teach these things cause they want to give you the gift of choice. Like I remember we read Anne Frank in high school, but they would never explain to use their full motives for getting us to read it: Which is to show us, that people outside mainstream culture and political power are just as beautiful and virtuous as those the political discourse include and acknowledge etc… Today Jews are accepted in popular society but they were hated 100 years ago etc…
For about ten years, I was a volunteer judge in our local teen court. Som of the kids were there because they had been arrested for misdemeanors, and some of the kids volunteered to serve as prosecutors and defense attorneys. We also had a mock trial team that I coached. Many of our volunteer teens were home schooled and they participated to get extracurricular activities. I probably met at least 50-60 home schooled kids, and they were the most educated, well-mannered kids that I have ever met!
I was home schooled until I was like 12. When I went to real school it was a huge shock and I did not cope well. I was behind in almost everything except a couple subjects where I was actually ahead, because my family just let me focus on the couple subjects I actually enjoyed. I also struggled to make friends because everyone was already in groups and knew eachother from elementary. I had to wear a uniform too which I hated so I always got in trouble for wearing it wrong. I got so many detentions my first year because I didn't know the "rules" like having to ask for the bathroom, needing to be in class early/on time, having to raise my hand to answer a question, so on and so on. I wouldn't home school my own kids, but I also don't blame my family for choosing that option given the circumstances of my early life.
@Still-alive definitely. I mean I was friends with the next door neighbors growing up but I wouldn't hang out with them until after we all finished school because it was about a 5-10 min bike ride between our houses #farmlife 😂
Good because kids who are homeschooled generally get a better education and tend to know how to talk to people way better than public schoolers. Homeschooled kids also have the ease of not having toxic peers folded into their lives or influencing them like a spatula in cake batter.
But also bad because kids need to know how to handle the outside world and be prepared for the ugly life of all kinds of people they will run into or be around. It's a hard decision to make. On the one hand you want your kids to get a good education without toxic kids or even teachers in their lives, but you also don't want them to be unprepared to handle the outside world.
there are many issues with the schooling system but home schooling is absolutely not the answer to it. many parents are underequipped for life themselves and their children would be left behind even more than they already are

Yeah, a lot of parents are and a lot are not. Also, the knowledge needed today for a variety of basic life functions can be found in books or online.
You know, I was never taught basic medical or life-saving skills in any of the schools I’ve been enrolled in. Instead, I learned about the achievements of Ferdinand Magellan. . .
Also, didn’t learn about how to manage my finances appropriately, but instead I learned about above basic knowledge of chemistry and biology that I will never use.
I think there’s a practical use for a degree, as I have a bachelor’s degree currently. This practical use is to make yourself more marketable to places you want to work in.
As for actual applicable knowledge for life? Very little to none in my opinion.
like i said, there are definitely flaws in the school system. but how do you want parents who barely have control over their finances to teach their kids about financial responsability or how to do their taxes? And most kids won't just pick up a book and learn those skills. I think schools should implement a basic life skills class, teaching finances, stock markets, insurances etc. i also think they need a health class, that talks about proper nourishment and how bad fast food and extreme sugar intake actually are for the human body.
also i doubt that any high school teaches more than basic biology/chemistry or even physics. i think scientific basics, history etc. all have their well deserved place on the curriculum. knowledge is intrisically very valuable
Yeah, I agree, schools should teach much more applicable subjects.
The state I live in as begun teaching students at the high school about proper financial management and has made it a graduation requirement I believe.
There’s a lot of interesting classes and subjects that schools teach but how applicable are they for the majority of those enrolled?
Is it perhaps more of a waste of time, money, etc.

I does have it's value. But the social aspects of school can be important. Though we can't ignore the issues with the countries public school system. So I'd opt for a charter school for my kids. One of the primary reasons being the hire standards. Another being that it would give me better access to the faculty of the school and the education program itself. So if a teacher starts bringing their political and social views into the classroom I can work to ensure it stops happening.
Only thing you get out of school is social interaction and now days that has gone out the window. Kids don't know how to take rejection or loosing except to the extreme what ever happened to the good ole ass whoopin now its shoot shoot shoot like its a game things are going to get much worse
it's clearly the future, studies show they have better outcomes for reading writing and speaking related tasks. less mental disorders and better social skills
home schooled kids tend to do worse in math though, but only a little.
It's a very effective method of education. Most home-schooled kids end up at a more advanced level of knowledge and understanding than their public school peers of the same age.
Uh well It’s a good thing One can get there GED because If Your in school and living with me your Not going to school ever again. And I’ll be teaching You Whatever I want.
Well on one aspect it could keep a kid from getting his ass kicked. On another, most actual education is available online, but could lead to being antisocial.
