Can schools see your browsing history if it has been cleared?

earlier at school my friend was searching somethings up on a school laptop that was logged into my school account. the things were very inappropriate (i told them to stop, but they thought it was funny).
i'm now sat here panicking because after we left the lesson we saw the IT guy walking towards the class we came from.
can they see what websites my friend visited? i cleared the browsing history but i don't know if that's enough.
i'm scared for tomorrow because i don't want to be in trouble and i also don't want to dob my friend in.

The IT specialists are most likely able to check the browsing history despite the fact that you cleared the cache.

If the laptop is school property, then there is probably a backdoor that could allow the IT people to check everything that is typed into the notebook, not just the browsing history. It all depends on the security level of your school.

If the laptop is yours but you only log on the school account, then clearing the cache would normally be enough unless you have committed a serious crime and the notebook would have to be confiscated and a forensic analysis of the entire hard disk done.

Usually, yes they can because it is a monitored computer that is connected to the school. The computer has website restricted locked though.


If it were inappropriate websites, usually the 18+ websites… They would be blocked by the school because it is a school computer and they don’t allow that on the computers.


I wouldn’t worry too much, because they don’t actively check browsing history or logs unless it’s brought to someone’s attention, there’s a bug, or something wrong with your computer.


However, just try to limit interactions with your friend if he does that… If asked, all you need to do is explain yourself. Again, don’t worry to much about it.

It can be seen on the server's sight of whoever is providing your internet service UNLESS you view it in a really secure VPN. Clearing your browsing history just removes it from your individual computer, but even that can be restored if you're a real tech geek.
