How to Improve Management Skills?

What are your company policies on managing staff? Does your company have a guideline on procedures for training new enrolled staff?
You should check with HR because they are supposed to guide you through the management training steps. If the company found you fit to be acting manager, then you had to prove yourself, your knowledge and skills.
If you are uncertain, then grab a paper or better an Excel table and create a table where you write down all what is expected of you. in the next column, you insert your qualifications for each item listed. On the third column, list what knowledge you are missing and on the 4th. column, your proposed step to remedy to your lack of experience/knowledge.
Try to find some manual online or through your HR that could assist your with general guidelines. Whatever you do, don't ever give the impression that you don't know what you are doing because it will only cause confusion with the new hire and she will see right through you.
Also, in an initial conversation with the new hire, find out what her qualifications are and where she is lacking knowledge and tailor your coaching accordingly. It does not have to be perfect but you have to give her the confidence she is seeking.
You can try practicing being more assertive and confident.
Those two traits are the key to being a good leader or manager.
Take notes whenever necessary and practice effective communication.

Yay! Most helpful girl!
To be a manager you have to be assertive. It can be hard for some people to tell others what to do, not everyone likes the feeling of bossing others around. If it's just temporary I wouldn't worry about it.
