Any advice for a new manager?

I just got promoted. My supervisor said I will have the final say on who my replacement is. How do I know if they’re the proper fit? Paper is different than reality.

That depends on how dire the consequences of failure are in your career. If you're working on cars and someone forgets to close a hood, people can die. If you're working QA/QC, typically you'll be double checking the double checking as a manager, so some failures really don't matter.
Just toss someone in and see how they do if your work isn't the kind where fucking up leads to casualties. It's what you're going to wind up doing regardless.

What skills are you looking for? Amazon puts a lot of emphasis on behavioral interviewing -- Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond for a customer. Tell me about a time when you had to dig deep to solve a problem. Tell me about a time when you strongly disagreed with your manager or a colleague on the approach to a problem.

I read a book on management at the library that was very interesting. Go to a library on a Saturday or Sunday and read a book on management. The ones in the library might be better then the ones you buy online cause they have staff who monitor everything for quality before its allowed on to be placed on the shelf.

You can train and watch them, maybe for a few weeks to see how they do.

do a skills assessment. You did the job so you know what is needed to do it the right way. Make a list with these attributes and do your interviews. Find someone with a good attitude. A real self starter and someone who is not afraid to learn new things.
