What have you noticed about toxic workplaces?

So i worked at this retail job for 2 years now and i realized some things...
The people who are here the longest like 6 years or whatever, are toxic in one way or another themselves.
2. Abusive arrogant assholes get promoted. Quickly. The managers are assholes and i think assholes stick together that is why they promote other assholes. And in many cases assholes dont outright look like assholes. But anyway i think assholes flock together and have a sixth sense for detecting one another.

There is an old saying - shit rolls down hill. That means that at such workplaces the top (or management) is poor and because of this only people of like mentality work there.

I have a very good friend who is an exceptionally hard worker. She was hired by a group that opened two businesses simultaneously. She was overseeing one of the businesses, doing multiple tasks for the 2nd business, working 6-7 days a week, and having to oversee new hires that were... bluntly... poorly skilled for the positions they had.

She has no support. Clients mentioned her being abandoned, etc. Other more experienced people in the field - who were hired as temporary relief staff - mentioned it.

She walked out on them.

This group she was working for did nothing to help her. From the start. When they had preparations for the Grand of their 2nd business everyone involved had help except her. And from early on they blamed her. ... And they were nasty and unprofessional and there are few people in the industry she / they worked in who would say otherwise.

Not just to her but they have an arrangement with doctors - they're a pharmacy - that tries to force patients to use the pharmacy. That isn't exactly proper conduct by law

Though not a pharmacist my friend is also very knowledgeable in the field. This group now has 2-3+ people working there doing far, far, far less than she did and she did it alone for 7+ months.

100% the management is total shit lol. Bigger companies (I find production the most), treat you like a number and will replace you because they know they can. But then you have the real tumors of every workplace like this that have been around for many years (somehow) and suck management's ass and make new peoples lives hell if they don't like them. Why I left the welding trade... not easy being a woman in a more manly dominated workplace, but factory life is total shit. The people stay cause they ate usually paid well, but years of doing the same boring shit day in and day out really drives the weaker links in a factory to becoming shitty gossipy losers cuz they do repetitive boring ass shit daily for years or even their whole lives lol. Fuck factory life lmao. Same bs no matter where you go. There's so much more to life than that.

Thank you, sweetie. Im sorry you had to go through that and I understand. The thing is, work is work. Of course any type of work will become boring and repetitive. People have no character so they can't handle anything in life and so act out. Its disgusting

The things you've said plus when there's an extremely high divide between employees, in ages and rank - there are companies where there's high management that's composed by men and women in their 60's, 70's and maybe even 80's; while the middle-low positions are occupied by people in their 20's to 30's.
This means that the place is a gerontocracy with no room to grow - the same old people will keep hogging the highest position, while the younger generations will quit within a couple of years because they can't climb up, no matter their skill and capabilities.

I worked in a real toxic place. There were only 3or 4 employees that were still there after a year. People would disappear without any explanation. My boss would schedule a meeting with me and put it on my calendar and then not show up for it. I always had a feeling I was being watched. I suspected that my internet traffic would be watched as well. It was just a really weird place to work.

Ugh! I worked at a place like that and it was hard to wrap my brain around.

It was a great place until a new manager came in who started off buying gifts for employees, giving them greeting cards and candy, and bad-mouthing the company until employee morale waa at an all time low.

Using manipulation, that manager was on a pedestal and worshiped like a god by the staff (as that manager was trying to move up the ranks).

Anyhow, the gossiping began. When a manager starts discussing employees with other employees, it gets very toxic. I saw one bad apple ruin the whole bunch. Good people tureded into paranoid, disgruntled, conniving, selfish, (assholes). It's sad to watch.

I struck it out for a while believing I couldn't be the only person witnessing the mess. I finally left. I never understood why all the minions fell for the lies. It was a happy place to work and turned into a toxic and ver unhappy place.

People either stay because they’re broke or too comfortable. For me, I had the funds but i got a bit greedy with it and wanted more plus I was way too comfortable. Instuck around for almost 4 years. The moment our company switched us to new management that was strict af and watching our every move, I quit lmao.

I've noticed they market themselves as being like a family. HUGE red flag! That means they want you to take on more responsibilities than are in your contract.
