It depends.

What role are you playing and how black is your soul?

HR is a particular field. You'll have instances where employees are so terrible, you have to fire them. You'll have instances where employees die (sometimes at home sometimes on the job) and you have to deal with the paperwork and rest of the crew. You'll have instances where someone is going through a tough time and you need to coach them through it.

It can be rewarding, but it is also very difficult. You have to portray an appearance of approachability, but your professional allegiance is against your employees.

HR is management, not labour.
But it's expected to straddle that line effectively.

Personally, I found it too hard to present to workers as on their side but be actively against them. It made me quite unhappy.

Now I'm working in IT, am in the union, and help out with union pushes. It's much more aligned with how I feel about work.
