Networking tips to get my next job?

How do I meet the right people and form meaningful connections with them in order to get my dream job? Should I just walk right into their office and ask them exactly what they're looking for in an employee? What does 'meaningful connections' even mean in the professional sense? So far, all I've done is try sending connection requests on LinkedIn. It's disheartening when people don't accept those requests. I don't know what the disadvantage would be to them to befriend someone that might be useful to them.

Who you know and past connections are hugely important. That said, a very polished resume that is current and fits the norms of format and content is also hugely important. With that, don't hesitate to use LinkedIn or indeed -- they are a great place to start and/or get a recruiter to notice you.

I don't know about where you live but in my area there are a lot of " meet and greet " networking events. The public is welcome to attend the events. You go with resumes or business cards, talk to every single person there to see how you can help each other.
You can search the web in your area for these types of events and attend as many as you physically can.

it really depends on your job... what kind of job or career you have

other than that it is references, previous experience...

nowadays, people just won't risk it with someone they really don't know

what are your skills? Do you have friends with the company you want to apply for? Have you tried LinkedIn? Have you thought about playing to your federal government. I'm sure the Canadian government has employment opportunities with the government.

First thing, work on your Elevator Pitch. You bump into someone you have wanted to meet while waiting for an elevator. You have 60 seconds to summarize your genius, sell yourself and ask for something, like an informational interview. GO!!!
