What are socially acceptable reasons for underperforming at work?

What are acceptable reasons for not working well and what are pathetic reasons for not working well at work?

I worked in tech, including some startups. There is no excuse in those kind of companies. I remember one company where the guy in the cube next to me was getting seriously chewed out by the boss because he only worked 14 hours the day before.

Bottom line is that it depends on the company and when the work needs to be done. If they have hard deadlines, the work has to get done one way or another.

Socially acceptable also depends on the person. Some of the overly ambitious types think anyone who doesn't perform to super human standards are weaklings. I've been around people like that before. Others are more laid back and are OK if you miss work due to a sniffle or your kid has a soccer match.

Once I worked my way up to the head of my department at work (Maintenance man) I had things figured out to the point where I could make an appearance in the morning and check everything, then go sleep in my van because we had a baby at home and I had 2 jobs and I was exhausted. I knew as long as I did the really important stuff I could get away with it. My boss called me "The ghost" because people always said I was around and the work was done, but he could never actually find me.

I'm not sure that there's any pathetic reasons, but I had some girls working for me one summer who were supposed to be weed whipping, but as soon as the string broke they just sat in the truck all day, lol. That's pretty bad.

there shouldn't be any reason for underperforming at work or anywhere else, in work you have people coming right out of uni. they can work out the volume of a banana, but haven't a clue as to peel it, not only do you need the education, but you also need the common sense to go with it

Anything else is likely self sabatoge, but it depends on the line of work. For example, a pregnant waitress may be a little slower than usual, that's ok in my opinion.

Brutal honest truth is your Boss Probably won't care unless you have a death in your Family or something as bad as that.

I have seen a lot of People do a lot less work than me and the Boss just ignores them and keeps them on and I make one mistake and I get told off Straight away.

Yeh, When I was young I was a lot Shyer than I am now and I used tolerate a lot of Shit that I shouldn't have because I thought at the time I was doing the right thing and I didn't stand up for myself, Now I'm in a job where my boss appreciates the work I do more, It's not perfect but it is a lot better than it use to be.

Socially acceptable reasons for underperforming:

*You bosses is being a dick ( Hostel work environments made me less productive)

*If the company you work for considers overtime a bonus

*No employee parking

*Having to solve customer issues with the aid of a manager who is always MIA.(If you are a paid employee who deals with customers, you should be able to deal with it yourself)

*Restricted access to tools to address customers needs.

Pathetic Reasons for under performing:

*Traffic making you late

*Being late

*Watching porn in the restroom

*Inept

*Under skilled/Untrained personnel

If everyone else sucks at their job and you overperform, then management will pile more work on you. So. it is beneficial to you to only perform well... or as poor as your co workers.

Mental and physical health related problems. So things like injuries that cause pain or things that make it hard to sleep leading to exhaustion I would say are fair. However not all companies would accept such things sadly.

Pathetic reasons: excuses like, this job or project is different/has idiosyncrasies / details that you aren’t privy to. 😂
