I am a victim of female solidarity. What should I do?

I was unemployed for a long time. I got a job at a clothing store. I have a female boss and two other female friends in the store are my senior and they have the authority to order me. My salary is very low but we get commission for every product we sell.

When the customer comes, these two women order me other jobs such as cleaning and they get commission by selling, while I get nothing. Even though our boss knows this, she ignores. When the store closes, they have me do all the tidying up and cleaning while they chat and drink coffee with boss.

I really need this job. Is there any advice you can give me other than quitting the job? How can I keep myself mentally good?

From the story you told, I don't see it as a gender issue, but an issue of not standing up for yourself. If the people were all male in the story, it would be the same story.

And I would give the same advice:

Talk to your boss and tell her you are dissatisfied with the situation and why. From what you said this is two main points. 1. You would like an opportunity to make some sales, since it is good experience and also you make more money. You feel you are being sabotaged and the other two workers are hogging all the sales. 2. You would like to work as a team on the tasks that need to be done at the end of the day. It is demoralizing to be paid the same or less than the others and being doing all the work at the end of the shift while others are doing next to nothing (chatting, drinking coffee).

I feel these are reasonable complaints and if your boss is reasonable, then she should be able to come up with some solutions. I would suggest though that you be proactive when making your case, and come with potential solutions in hand, such as:

1. Getting training and opportunities to make sales. Maybe this means a rotation when customers come in on who gets to try to make the sale with them. But keeping you from interacting with customers will mean you never grow, so there would be no reason for you to stay, unless you want a job as a janitor which is what it sounds like you are.

2. Having a task list at the end of shift and everyone gets assigned task (s) to complete, and the task assignments rotate each week so it is totally fair and no one has to do "the hard task" every week and someone else gets "the easy task" each will.

I also highly recommend thinking about your long term goals, and how this job fits into those for you. Financially, career-wise, etc. What do you want to do? How will you get there? Is this the right job? I think it's smart to always keep looking for other opportunities even when working. I made the mistake for a long time of finding a job and focusing on just keeping that job. Now I have learned to always be job hunting, if you find something better, apply. Businesses are not loyal to employees, there is no reason for employees to be loyal to businesses. Spend at least an hour each week looking for other jobs. It also helps you to learn what you are worth and also what skills or education you might want to get to get a better job.

Tell your boss you're sick of being used as the clean up guy or you go to hr and complain, if nothing changes then you need to make changes by being bolder. They are treating you this way cause you're the new guy and feel like they can get away with anything cause they've been there longer. If nothing changes, then you gotta walk away from environment like that. I know you don't want to quit but you can always find a better job. Putting us with bs like that everyday will get to you.

That is so sad and fucked up. I'm so sorry about what you are going through, no one deserves to go through that. My advice would be to try looking for other jobs whilst working there because you won't be able to maintain your peace in an environment like this. Things will get better. You can also look at a few options to earn money online, I don't mind sharing them with you. It's not that you'll earn loads of money but its better than nothing.

when customers come, go to them right away before your boss and the senior workers order you to do other stuff. the best is always be ready before customers come. if they order you to do other things when you dealing with customers. ignore them. plus the female boss couldn't fire you for no reason.

Talk to them about it. If that doesn’t work, talk to their superiors. If they don’t do anything, give your two weeks notice and quit as soon as you’re able to find another job. The more jobs you have on your resume, the better.
