Freelance policies?

Whether you're freelance or have a corporation of one, and you work in something that requires modifications if necessary. What are your policies around the number of modifications and whether or not you charge for them?

I have a client that's beginning to get on my nerves, with the number of modifications he keeps asking for, even though each time I do exactly what he's told me.. long story short, this project is dragging on and I want to finish and move on to something else - I have a lot of other things to do.

I've never had this issue of seemingly endless changes, but I'm thinking of putting into place a penalty beyond 3 free rounds of modifications.

Free rounds of modification? Aren't you generous. You could of course, although it will invite a habit of trying to improve upon your work by altering the request slightly. Phrasing matters here. Rather than free rounds of modification could it be stages of development where an (optional) dialogue is held at the start or end of each? That streamlines the process for you, maintains a transparent approach and does not force you to spend valuable time redoing work.

Things such as this is why billing by the hour is often a good idea - at the least for extra work. Giving any concise suggestions is difficult without knowing more. As for the current client, you can of course attempt to reason, suggest a new format and alike but ultimately may have to drop them if they are not willing to reason.

Yeah, I suppose it can be seen as generous, but it seems pretty standard for me to give freebie modifications.
Hourly rates can't be done in this case. There are too many things to take into account that wouldn't be profitable, but that's fine.

What I do take away from what you've said here is clearer stages of development. It's something I do but it isn't very streamlined or clearly defined for me or the client. It just sort of happens, depending on the client and I think "ladeedadeeda, let's go with the flow, whatevs". But now that I'm getting more clients, it's not workiny.
So I'll definitely set something up for that.

I do not deal with that 💩. I am so intensely involved with client and there money that plans have to be understood in great detail. It does require lots of flying and large financial payment to company in advance. That usually works out to 30,000 advance but I worked that back into my charges over the first year when moderate to large apartments facilities are purchased.

I do not think we are structured the same 🤷🏻‍♂️
