Is a boss asking too much if they want you to review what you learned during the work day during your unpaid personal time?

Like, isn't that against employees' rights to be expected to do anything work-related in their personal, unpaid time? Or is reviewing what you recently learned a faire request, even though they expect you to do it for free?

I think it is a good thing to review what you learned at work in your free time. It shows your boss your determination.

One has to decide for themselves whether or not a little of your personal time is worth it or not. If it’s a good job with the potential for being a great job then it seems like a little personal time is a good investment. If it’s a mediocre job and they are just being cheap then no it isn’t worth it.

Are you getting paid a salary or by the hour? If you're on salary they can ask you to do things in your off time. If you're getting paid by the hour they can't expect you to do anything in off time. If he says it's mandatory, tell him to show it to you in the employee manual where it's required.

If im understanding this correctly, they want you to review what you did/learned on your time off of work? If it's for training purposes, I suppose your employer could ask but you're not obligated to answer if you don't want to. However, it's probably in your best interest to be open if you like your job and value your relationship with your employer.

I don't know about Canada but in the U. S. it is not legal to have employees conduct work on unpaid time and this has been upheld time and time again in state and Federal court.

A job is a business transaction, your gonna provide them a service and they are gonna compensate you plain and simple. If however you are a salary paid employee (as opposed to hourly), they can require you to work beyond work hours without compensation. Dont let greedy, micromanageing, non-leaders take advantage of you

I cannot speak to the law where you live, but here in California if I call an employee in for a meeting by law it is paid, unless that employee is salaried-exempt, which none of mine are.

Well you should have to work and not get paid but don't expect to get paid for time you didn't work. If you leave work early, don't expect to get paid the whole day. Have you ever left work a few minute's early? See how that works.

If you benefit from it, it may be worth doing. And sometimes some unpaid overtime is required to help your career. It's one way you get ahead.
But fundamentally, yes, if it's work stuff, it should be done in the clock.

it's against the law period. most employers nowadays refuse to pay OT due to quarterly budgets and whatever amount stays under the budget goes in their pockets
