Would you rather work longer hours just to ensure you received a full check (see below)?

Question

So my current job likes to give you the Friday before AND the Monday after OFF for these “weekend” holidays (like Christmas Eve/Christmas and New Years Eve/New Years). Kinda silly but hey, I’ll take it. However, if you haven't been working there for at least 10 months, you don’t get paid to have the holiday off. So instead of working at least 40 hours a week, you’re working the days that we’re open. You’re forced to take the days off but you can makeup some of the missed hours by working longer shifts each day for the next 2-3 weeks. Would you work the missed hours (to total up to your 40 hours at the least) or would you just stick to your regular shift which is being cut thanks to their made up holiday days?

My Answer

These checks bout to be lookin iffy with only 24-32 hours on them lol. But since this job pays almost double what the others did, half a check is almost a full check from my last job (when including all the money I lose to taxes per check). So I see no reason to work extra hours at a job I dislike. I will absolutely stick to 8 hours and enjoy my upcoming days off. I DO NOT miss working 12 hours at the job before last, in which I ended up making a little less there than what a full check here can offer in 8 hours a shift. 😂

Not anymore. When i was young, i was an overtime whore. Now, my bills are paid and I don’t accrue debt. They’re lucky to get forty hours out of me. Ell oh ell! It’s kind of a shame because i’m very good at what i do. My skill and knowledge are highly valued. They just can’t have the best of me. I work to live. I don’t live to work.

Christmas and New year have been around a lot longer than we have been alive. Not sure why you have an issue with stores and places closing to celebrate the days.

Anyway, no I wouldn't work the extra hours, if I didn't need the money. I to like saving a majority of my income, but still no way I am working extra hours to make up for the money I didn't make when the business was closed for 2 days.

The amount of hours doesn't matter that much for me, I make flag hours. This means I get paid a certain amount of time for each job I do, so I can work 40 physical hours but flag 70 hours plus as long as the work is there. It also means if things get too slow I can work the same 40 physical hours and only flag 20 hours. If I'm not working on a job I'm not getting paid.

I am willing to work hours to make up hours and don't mind long shifts. I work 10 or 12 hours shifts anyways sometimes 16 but when I get to 40 or more give me a two or three days rest. I and wouldn't say I hate my job but I don't like it either.

Look at it this way. It is only this year because “if” you are still with them next Christmas you will have been there to get paid for the time off. So enjoy the time off even if it is without pay because the day will come when you wish you had a day off from these mofo’s….

It's all about the check for me. If I have to work longer hours to make what I need to survive that's what I'm going to do. I'm a truck driver, I work 14 hours a day 6 and 1/2 days a week. Legally I can work 70 hours a week and I do most of the time

and if they pay is already reasonable, then I'd take the rest instead... considering the job is not as fun anyway, lol

I don't want to work longer hours unless it's financially do worth while I only need to do it once every 6 months or so. I have no interest in working longer or harder than a regular 9-5 job!

I'll always work overtime if I'm available for it or feel physically up for it. But that's usually just during a certain part of the year or if we have a load that we need to get done asap before Monday.

Depends what I feel like doing 🤷‍♂️ Sometimes I’ll go for the extra work, sometimes I’ll take the time off. I try to stay around 50-55 hours a week, if I’m on pace for that it usually comes down to what the job is

If I could afford to lose those hours I'd work the regular hours and take the cut. If I couldn't afford to lose the money, I'd make up the hours and work longer days. It all depends on the individuals financial situation

I dont know I've never dealt with a situation like this. I do my 12hrs for 3 days and get a check that's it. If I decide to do extra during the week then it falls on that pay check. It's never been an either or. Do you work for the government system?
