How many students do you see in your country literally die by suicide while trying to get into prestigious colleges through competitive exams?

I am from India.

3 students preparing for NEET (medical entrance exam for MBBS and other degrees) committed suicide within a span of 8 to 10 days. Two students from the same coaching institute, committed suicide on the same day, both living in the same hostel. The other student died just 5 days ago. All preparing for MBBS entrance.

There is one other student who committed suicide was studying for IIT-JEE (engineering).

The toll of suicides for this year alone stands at 15 suicides for Kota city alone. Let alone India.

A total of 13,000+ students died in 2021 from suicide in India.

To be honest, it is fairly common nowadays to hear such news.

My mom's friend's only daughter committed suicide because they were forcing her to become a doctor because they were doctors. This one is new to me. She told me just now.

Woah... morbid thing to talk about but hey, such is life...

Anyway, from what I've seen and observed in the U. S. most people just toot to their own horn so to speak. The people you speak of who are pressured to go to Harvard, Princeton, etc. prestigious colleges usually have parents who also went, or who KNOW someone from up there that they can kinda bribe their way in if you know what I mean. Also, thankfully, most parents love their kids that much that they don't pressure them to become doctors or high acheiving (TOO high?). If you can observe here, sometmes, it's even THAT free that the kids decide to opt out of going to college all together here and decide to even just marry their high school sweethearts and have a few children right out of high school with Welfare and WIC in tow because their parents also got caught in the cycle of low income or poverty level and so did THEIR parents and so on and so on! .. You only ever hear of those high acheiver kids from the rich. Most people, including myself, didn't care to be THAT competitive. ... Lol, maybe that was my problem lol... Anyway, yeah, the people/children who DO end up competing either drop out before it becomes such a DIRE situation/circumstance like that, or they cheat on their exams/studies, or they "flunk" out or just party all the way in their dorms (till someone dies from hazing etc.) or they quit and go enter the workforce instead. It's a RAINBOW of people, children and situations here in the U. S. ... Thankfully? ... Either that or maybe there ARE people that take their studies THAT seriously and literally but I still think it's STUPID to kill yourself just because of college. NOTHING's worth your life like that. Especially not academia stuff!

This is really sad and awful. They could be alive and the pressure they face is inhuman. No one should have to go through this.

I don't know about the statistics in my country but I believe that students don't commit suicide due to their parents pressure.

As for the country where I live, I've heard that there's a university where students kill themselves by jumping off the building. A girl I met in college told me that Architecture students also end their lives often. This is very concerning and scary.

In Colombia, entering the most prestigious public universities is easy, the only course that is very difficult to enter is medicine, the rest are easy to enter, even with the lowest scores there will always be a course where you can enter, medicine is difficult to enter because most of his students bought the tests to get high scores and thus enter medicine.

It’s very rare here (probably because all universities are free and good), but one morning when I walked from the parking lot to the Uni building‘s entrance, I almost stepped in a fresh puddle of blood. Some poor schmuck had jumped from the building that morning, presumably because he failed some important exam. I am just glad I did not witness it.

That’s very sad. What seems to be the reason for this? Is it family pressure, societal or cultural pressure, etc? This doesn’t seem to be an issue here in Canada. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but I have never heard of anything like it on such a massive scale.

You will be surprised by what happens in Asian countries lol. Even though the culture and society are different, the mentality is the same. Do a bit of searching, and you will get it.

In the US, suicide is the #2 leading cause of death for college students. There are approximately 1,100 deaths by suicide on college campuses in the US every year.

Wow that is sad. When you hear of it here, it is usually someone who is an incoming freshman and already there.

I am completely against parents forcing big name colleges, or forcing "becoming a doctor", on their children.

Probably not all that common in the US. Most parents don't put that much pressure on their kids to perform at that high of a standard. (Of course there are always exceptions.) The higher level schools are looking for people who will become leaders in their chosen area of study. The average person who wants to go to college doesn't necessarily want to become a "leader in their field". I was a good student but I had no intention of going to a highly prestigious college. I did well in my career in the medical industry (I wasn't a physician nor did I want to be). Going to a big name University would not have served me well in any way. I'm glad I went to the college that I went to.
