They have more options that don't require college. You also have to consider what degrees people are going after. The increase in college students/degrees has been in fields that used to be considered crap fields.
Here in the US people are becoming over educated anyway. There are way too many people going to college. It's already becoming a problem with shortages in fields that don't require a degree. Most of those fields are traditionally male dominated.
Because a good trade school beats a lame "liberal arts" (sic) school nowadays. Now the NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) bum people are a mess and need a good swift kick in their rears, but before we get too worried about not enough college degrees, ask those going what their actual degrees are.
