I snapped at my boss... am I the asshole?

My boss made a joking comment about me being "too sweet to handle conflict" and said she would step in to take care of something with a customer. She said this in front of another coworker too. This felt very belittling to me because I've proven myself so many times, but she was recently promoted into the position and frequently talks to me like a child. Other leaders on our team have given me so much more responsibility, but she doesn't seem to think I'm capable of this aspect of my job.

I snapped back and told her that I can be very firm when I need to be, and that I can handle myself as a professional 32 year old woman. Since then, she is cold towards me and I'm worried I took it too far...

Was I the asshole in this situation?

On one hand, you did stick up for yourself, but your boss may not of seen it that way. However, if you apologize, you might just be going back to what she thinks about you. I would still be careful though, find a way to build up your confidence so she changes her opinion of you. Good luck :D

She publicly patronised you. Inappropriate.

You publicly challenged her authority. Also inappropriate.

Much better to work through grievances together and in private, form some sort of alliance, and together girl power and all that.

Is that all you said? There's not, or at least shouldn't be a problem with pointing out that you can handle yourself.
