I’ve had 8 jobs and I’m 17?

Question

Is having multiple jobs bad? I have worked since I was 13 and always have done so while in school and such and saved up more than most of my friends. I have always liked to quit when I get comfortable and stop learning at a job because I like being in an environment where I’m not comfortable all the time. Anyway, all of them were minimum wage jobs except for one (I hated it there bc of the boss) so I wasn’t
losing out on money at all. Some people view it as lazy. But I just like to change things up. I’ve never been fired or even had a talking to. All my employers loved to work with me and said how hard of a worker and how fast I was. I’m also a straight A honour roll student. I don't know. I don’t have all of them on my resume just the most relevant 3. But I feel guilty almost.

It's fine. That's what rookie days are for. If an employer can't handle someone who literally "works", then they can shove it.

It's amazing that you caught your issues so early on. It took me over 4 decades. Or maybe I am stupid. Or maybe we didn't have the internet world growing up.

You mentioned 2 very extremely important matters:

1- Guilt

2- Boredom

Guilt is not helpful. It's actually a very dangerous weapon that turns on you. We all have waaaaay too much excess guilt. Specially girls. Because guilt (and all of our emotions) are like body parts, or internal organs. If used excessively, they become worn and break down. Broken guilt, is you misjudging yourself way too harshly. If what I just said doesn't resonate with you, I would recommend seeing a therapist and working on it until you really don't feel the excessive guilt anymore. In other words, you should be on your own side, in a balanced way. Not on any other person's team, and definitely not in an excessive way. The good news is that with PERSISTANT therapy, and "The Mindfullness Meditation" method, you can start to feel your insides, and get to the bottom of the guilt issue. It is natural for smart people like you, specifically smart people like you, coming out of our current schooling system and society, to have such a distorted guilt internal organ. But there is the simple way out for it too.

Now the word "boredom" that you mentioned is a more crucial matter to pay attention to, and provbably more complicated. It is going to play a very very important role in your life. So it's going to need your main focus. Top of your priority list. If you decide not to check this website, I will try my best to give you the jist of the matter. (The only thing they might try to sell you is a recommendation to health professionals which you don't really have to sign up for). It is about ADD or ADHD and it explains things better than I can in my few words. It might give you a different perspective on life, and open a door to understanding what's behind your current reasonable concern.

You are so smart that you learn things fast, and lose interest in them. Losing interest, in people with ADD/ADHD prone brains, makes their brains wander/lose focus. Losing focus makes you bored. Boredom is painful. Emotionally painful. Emotional pain is just as debilitating as physical pain. (Even though we have been manipulated for millenials to think that emotional pain doesn't matter. Or in smart people, like you, we take to logic to try and work our way out of it, which never works.)

Pain, specially emotional pain that can't be seen or is easily ignored because of its invisibility, can set you up for problems at work, failure, disrupted or a nonexistant social life, and any kind of destructive behaviors you can find on the menu.

See lots of good doctors.

If you find something that doesn't bore you, stick to it. Even if it seems like the weirdest and stupidest and lamest thing on the planet.

Interestingly, starting your own business could be your best cure. I doubt being a dumb employee to anyone would have great outcomes for a smart person like you.

Life is short, and like I mentioned, it's great that you found out sooner. It gives you a headstart.

P. S. Avoid anything that you are allergic to or even the tiniest bit sensitive to.

Keep a sharp eye out for Autism if you decide to have kids.

PAID work history/ experience  isn’t bad.  You’ll just probably have to work a bit harder to show future employers why they should hire you, if they need someone to be reliable, and with them for a certain season/ period of time. Obviously, it wouldn’t be hard for you to point out to them, right off the bat, you can handle most duties/ tasks, and are a willing, fast learner.  Keeping the most admirable jobs ( I guess) on the resume would be the smartest thing to do. Say you did have a 100 jobs, or so, it wouldn’t be necessary to list them all down from A-Z. 😂😭 Super happy for you though, in the sense you are that resilient.  Maybe once, try challenging yourself to stay for a certain ‘GOAL’ of time, instead of impulse, but at the same time, maybe that is really an intuition, and it’s just being fine-tuned for you. Also, I’m sure once you hit a career that’s going to keep you invested/interested, you won’t have to worry about simple jobs, or so. 🤔 Hoping for you and the best! All the same! 🤞🤞🤞

Yes and no. It just depends on the employer as far as how they view you. If they don’t care than that’s good. But some employers will look at that as a red flag. I may as well, especially if your position requires a lot of training, which obviously cost the company money. So they may wonder if you’re going to jump ship after a while, which not only screws them out of money but also an employee. It makes no sense to train someone at, let’s say a cost of $5000 only to have them leave less than a year later. For example the military has certain jobs that require a lot of training, as well as thousands of dollars. So they require a person going into those fields to commit to an enlistment longer than the usual 4 year obligation. They’re getting their money’s worth. If these were just summer jobs

At 17 having multiple jobs is NOT bad, with one caution. At some point (although not in this economy and not in minimum wage jobs) employers may start looking at your work history and asking why you leave jobs quickly (rhetorical question here, I'm not asking you that) -- just something you want to think about. (One answer is, I'm looking to expand my experiences or something like that.) But, you already answered it: you're looking for more challenge. Employers want that; they're desperate for it.

But, no, it's not bad. What stands out is that you're working and you're learning. Make sure to take at least one thing away from each job and apply that to future jobs.

No of course not, as long as you weren't forced to start work at such a young age!

So your situation kind of reminds me of one I went through in that I went through a few jobs and left after only a few weeks/months to try something else instead, including my recent one. I need a right environment and people in order for me to stay somewhere.

It will look good on your CV but be prepared to have a good answer when they bring up why you left your previous jobs, especially in short periods of time.

Honestly my mom works for a company and she didn’t the hr but she helps with the hiring applications. Having multiple jobs isn’t a bad thing, man people my age have that issue still. Plus people leave jobs for many different reasons. I left my old job due to a code of conduct issue. Honestly if that didn’t happen I’d still be over there as I did enjoy it (even though it’ll be closing in 2028).

Remember you are still only 17, most 17 year olds don't have jobs and still growing. It's good you are earning your own money and will be making plans soon but there is a thing called burnout and it can happen to anyone. Don't rush to earn loads of money to save, spend some on yourself like a holiday or something

Don't worry about it. That's normal. I had the same issue. I found that unless a job was fast paced and kept me constantly busy, I'd get too bored.

I've found that the best Jobs for me were warehouse jobs where I could listen to stuff on headphones while working. Plus the job was a physical workout so I enjoyed that aspect a lot.

It depends on how long each one lasted and why they ended

I've had 1 formal job and a long term volunteer position
I also had a short term volunteer position, 2 sets of work experience and various off the books stuff as well as my own business activities over the past 17 years
