I’m in college so it is normal to feel tired and stressed out and stuff.
But I still have friends who are handling things a lot better than I am. They’re learning languages as a hobby, working jobs on the side, going to the gym.
I even know some kid who’s doing a three month vacation in Europe. Granted the military is paying for his college and he earned $50 an hour as a contractor for them.
But either way I still wanna be that guy. I’d much rather be the guy with money vacationing and doing fun sh*t instead of the guy struggling to get by and stressing out every day.
My first year of college it was a new experience and I actually enjoyed it. Especially considering that it was after a year and a half of being stuck inside my house during covid.
But aren’t there better ways to live?
It’s become rather obvious that college is the source of my misery. But then again, I only have about two years left to go and perhaps I will really enjoy my career, there’s no doubt the money will be good too.
It’s just I’m beginning to think, why am I doing all this if it stresses me the f*ck out? There’s gotta be other things I can do that will still make me money.
I’ve heard about the trades but the truth is I didn’t grow up doing that stuff.
And I’ve heard that your body can only take that work for so many years. People end up with bad knees and bad backs.
But I suppose Electricians and Plumbers end up alright. And my Uncle’s a contractor so he doesn’t end up doing strenuous labor either.
It’s just I don't know what to decide on amongst the other options I have.
So that’s why I’m asking other people to just share what they know.
And then again I haven’t ruled out being a delivery driver either whether it be for USPS or Amazon or Fed Ex or whoever else. I’ve heard the pay’s actually alright and they give their drivers benefits and stuff. And I kinda like driving to be honest. I find it relaxing and it takes my mind off shit
So if I’m done with college, what career should I work?

I think you have a lot of anxiety and anxiety is exhausting.
Things are hard at your age. You’re still trying to figure it all out.
Finish your schooling. You’re already almost half way through.
Trades and the kind of jobs you mentioned do pay well if you’re in the right place. It is also true though that your body can only handle so much.
I work in a factory myself. It’s a union job. I get over a month worth of vacation every year if you count vacation, paid time off, and sick days. I have a pension, I make over $60K a year without overtime, and I easily have the best medical and dental insurance out of anyone I know. For example with my dental insurance I literally pay nothing. $0. For ANYTHING. My job is so secure it’s crazy. Getting fired is almost not a possibility, and there has never been a layoff. During Covid we were even getting a bonus of + $2.00 an hour and were hiring during the pandemic. We make food, so we’re essential workers. My wife is a nurse and makes like $75J a year (even more than I make if I work a bunch of OT.
What is my point in telling you all this? My point is that whether you go for a trade like plumbing or HVAC, or stay in school there are opportunities out there. It will take time. I was once where you were, wondering what to do with my life. Now my life couldn’t be more stable. Just keep towing the line, make good choices, don’t knock anyone up, don’t get arrested, don’t develop a drug habit and trust in God. It will all come together eventually and one day you’ll look back to now as I do to my youth and be thankful that it all came together.
Oh yeah, and like your friends I’m learning Latin as a hobby.
God has resources you don’t. Stay the course and you should be fine.
Nah man its just stressful being in school and stuff. In a way I was kinda wondering if maybe I’d be happier just starting a trade up now. I understand that you joined the army practically straight away its just I’d honestly puke my guts out if I had to run at 5 in the morning.
Yeah, I joined the Marines when I was 19.
In those days, many of us would go on said runs still drunk, not even hung over. There is no calling in to work in the military. I can’t speak for the other branches but I think a lot of people would be stunned by how hard we partied (we didn’t get the chance often cause we were in the field, doing extended training, or deployed a lot) and still got through the day pretty well on point and not missing a beat.
It will make you tough and help you grow confidence.
The thing is you already have about 2 years invested and school loans towards that investment. If you pull out now you wasted your time and money.
It’s tough at your age. My son is 20 and is trying to figure out exactly what he wants to do.
I remember those days myself. Had to relive them once I got out of the Corps for a bit.
Unless you make a lot of bad choices or have a stroke of unfortunate luck, typically security comes with age.
I get what you mean. Maybe I should just rough it. Things could change later
I think that’s probably your best bet. This won’t be forever. Just 2 more years and you can hopefully get to a happier stage in life.
