Is he going to fire me?

Hi everyone. So I am three months into my new job, and I am a bit of a "floater" meaning that I float between two apartments (Accounting and Estimating)

I am not from an accounting background so of course I made a few mistakes which were quite annoying, but I am not from an accounting background, but I do work hard which people see and I take initiative.

I had a three-month review with my director and he said that he likes having me here and there I am doing well.

Well today, I saw an email which I wasn't supposed to see and my director asked for a meeting with an admin person and my accountant superior and in the email, it had a few dot points for discussion and the last bit of the email read the following:

"I would like to discuss (my name) and her helping out with accounts. Is it working? Is it not working? Is it something that (my colleague) can pick up because she is looking for more work? If it isn't working I will look for an alternative solution"

Last Thursday, he did mention that he is going to look at making me focus more on estimating rather than accounts in a few months.

I felt that the email sounded ominous. Am I paranoid?

If you have a hard work ethic and you take initiative, I believe you should be fine.


I work in upper management and I’m involved in hiring and firing decisions.


The CEO tasked me with reporting to him if I believe somebody is deadweight.


Based on what you’ve described, it sounds like they’re trying to find the best way to place you within the company.


There’s not a super obvious spot that needs to be filled. But, having you on their team helps them smooth out how they want to finally decide to delegate tasks.


It’s difficult to find good talent, and if their company is growing, it only makes sense for them to retain good talent and find a place for them.


As someone said before, unless they are actively trying to cut costs, I don’t see why they would cut you from the team.


If you’re an asset to the company and would be beneficial to keep while the company grows, it only makes sense for them to hold onto you and find you a place within the company where there is a need.


Every company is different, but at least for the company I work for, you should be safe as long as you…
* Have a strong work ethic.
* Take initiative, are proactive, and resourceful.
* Work well with the rest of the team.
* Eager to learn and grow and contribute.
* Embody the company values and fit the culture.
* Hit your KPIs (key performance indicators) reliably and consistently.

I do think you're being paranoid, but I can see why you'd come to that conclusion.

At the moment, you're juggling two positions, and you may have had some shortcomings but your work ethic is picking up the slack, correct? Provided the mistakes were easily fixed, and you followed the procedures (if any) for retraining on those procedures, I doubt that your job (s) are in jeopardy.

What the email likely means is that one of the responsibilities will be removed from you, and given to the colleage. It may be seen as a demotion, but really it just means you can focus on the other title you've been assigned.

If you were to be fired, it means your workload would then be forced onto someone else, and unless the company is actively cutting costs, I find it unlikely that they'll take that avenue.

It's hard to say for sure what your director's intentions are based on the limited information you provided. However, it's natural to feel a little concerned when you see an email like that.

One thing you could do is schedule a meeting with your director to discuss your role and responsibilities. This will give you an opportunity to express your commitment to the job and to learn what his expectations are. You could also ask for feedback on your performance and how you could improve in your current role.

It's also important to remember that mistakes happen, especially when you're new to a job or in a new role. Don't be too hard on yourself and try to learn from your mistakes. If you do end up receiving feedback or constructive criticism, try to take it as an opportunity to grow and improve.
