Why does working make me feel better about my mental health?

When I'm not working and just loping around at home I feel useless and yes I do the odd thing here and there. However when I am out and making money doing work I feel better about my self where as if I'm not working making money well it's another story. It's like work gives me some form of purpose, so that I can do the things in my life. Buy a house, truck etc... So if I don't have work it feels like I'm not moving ahead in life and with bills to pay it eats away at the financial aspect of it.

Am I the only person who feels better about them selves when they are doing a job they enjoy?

I have a similar view on things. For me it's simply because I have nothing else to do. So working gives me the ability to not only make money but to also socialize, to do something with my time, it makes me feel like I'm actually getting somewhere. School gives me that same feeling which is why I went back. I think what's going on is maybe you're just experiencing a light form of depression or isolation because you're not doing things that actively make you happy. Also it kinda feels like you're focusing too much on the future or on stressful things that are otherwise outside of your control. Try focusing on living in the moment and not living in your head or living for tomorrow. Just live for today. Live for right now. Do more things that make you happy, spend more time with people who make you happy, go out and LIVE.

Working is very important for the reasons that you state. It gives a person a sense of purpose, and it makes them feel responsible and gives them a sense of "earning".
