I lived in NYC for over 30 years.
You can’t make enough just being a waitress.
most waitresses are working part time while going to school or on another job.
they are young and live with roommates.
A long time ago, I went on a date with a hard working young man who was very proud of his accomplishments…

he worked in a high end steakhouse. He was able to get $2k cash a month and bought an apt. in the boroughs. (So it was like $4k today)
but he didn’t spend any money on other things.
so it’s a certain life style to do that work…eventually you move on to a better job.
most make $300. a week.
Rent in NYC is $1500-$2000 for a studio.

Cheap state?
Anywhere one hr. away is not so cheap.

You can work as a waitress, just not going to make good money.
Most struggle.
Most live in the 5 boroughs, take the subway to Manhattan for work.
You can look at rents in the 5 boroughs.
2 bedrooms might be $2500-$3000
You can split with a roommate.

The Manhattan and the other 4 towns.
(Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island). Staten Island you have to take a ferry.
New Jersey and Connecticut are 2 states next to New York.
