Started with the desire to not only count things but also write it down, after one young aspiring math caveman got a severe injury in is hands from carving nothing but straight lines, while counting a huge pile of grapes, he invented the numbers.
These numbers were improved by the egyptians, and later the romans. Egyptian used complex images while romans the still used roman numerals.
These were still too complex and a arabian nerd came up with the arabian numbers and the allmighty 0, which changed everything.
Built upon that basically everything about modern Math was discovered by the old greek.
You also got different approaches, Mayan and Aztek had also highly developed math system, being able to calculate the universe really accuartely. Other Native American tribes had different math systems not based on 0-9 but only 4 numerals, and now our computer use 0/1 or 16 numerals for colours...

It started out as a way to count things, then developed from there.
I think the number zero was invented by the Egyptians and paper was invited by the Chinese and the Chinese also used the Abacus but I don't know who invented it.
It was developed to be more difficult than it needs to be.
