The thing is that people really are taking out loans to get degrees like that. One reason why so many more people take loans than in the past is because so many more people are going to college (too many). That means available funds are spread a lot thinner.

The number of people going to college has increased, but the degrees in STEM and other well paying majors has not increased. The increase has been in what we used to call "basket weaving".

A BIG part of the problem is that society keeps pushing higher education, like it's the solution to everything - even though it's not. More and more people go to college just to be going to college, without regard to whether their major will get them anywhere.

So they go to college when they shouldn't go, and get a degree in a crap major. Then they realize their major is crap, and don't want to pay off the loan which they shouldn't have gotten in the first place.

Society is to blame for pushing people into college. Academia itself is the worst culprit. Academia telling people that academia is the solution is like the president of GM telling people to buy GM cars.

Higher education is not the answer to everything. People need to stop believing that nonsense.

I think its stupid. This American government bails out banks and big corporations with trillions of dollars when the big recession hit in 2007, 2008 plus several hundreds of billions of dollars towards Ukraine but isn't willing to help out their own country men and women who are struggling to pay those ridiculous overpriced education who need a education to help them land good jobs in future.

And what's funny many conservatives are happy about it while many of them who are below or average in financial means will be stuck paying for their education debt most likely for decades or until they die and struggle financially until they die.

This was ALWAYS a ploy to obtain and maintain female voters. Women have the majority of student loan debt as more women go to college than men. Women also tend to obtain worthless degrees.

The government has no problem coming to the rescue of banks and Wallstreet when they need financial help but yet the future of the country which are the youth can't get government help?

Canceling these college debt will greatly benefit the country as these young couples could focus on getting married and being able to buy a house and start a family without having to worry about super high college debt.

Any debt cancellation needed to be coupled with a way to control college tuition. I'm not a fan of having tax dollars go into the coffers of wealthy universities. (some universities have campuses that look like 5-star hotels. That isn't needed for education).
I also think that if the govt is going to spend 400B on reducing wealth disparity, the money could go to the very poor and to early education.

My wife have both already decided that if we have a son or daughter, if they choose to take any form of gender studies/women's studies, or major on anything listed in the Forbes top 10 most worthless degrees, we will cut all funding and make sure they understand they are on their own.

I don’t have any student loans but my daughters do and it’s way more than the $20,000 forgiveness would have done anyway , would barely make a dent in it , luckily they chose fields that will pay it off quickly while working
