Do you think it's right to cancel student loan debt?

I'm curious if you think it's right/fair for the government to cancel student loan debt. Some of the considerations are millions of people have paid their debt off themselves and worked in jobs they didn't like to earn student loan forgiveness. So they will have done that for nothing. Also what happens in the future? This current generation gets forgiven then it just goes back to normal?

Many call it a cheap political ploy to farm votes and favor from young people.

Although I don't necessarily agree with birding the young with large amounts of debt, it debt that they readily signed up to and for some, it was a daft idea that may never pay for itself.
So no, it's their debt, they wanted it, they should keep it. Or pay it off by getting a good job and career.

I paid off my student debt with other debt (that I still owe) because of a lower interest rate. So, not only do I still have to pay off my student loans but now I also have to help pay off everyone else's?

Oh, as for it being a political ploy, that's actually exactly the way politics are supposed towork. Politicians do what we want them to and in return they get to keep their job. We are not supposed to reward politicians for making us laugh or validating our grievances. We are supposed to reward politicians explicitly because they fix our problems.

@normalice it's not that simple. Catering to a specific demographic at the expense of others is not what they're supposed to do in a democratic Republic. Especially when the supreme Court literally says he can't do it but that wasn't really the point of my question

Do you think the electricians, plumbers, carpenters, union laborers care that "you" made a poor decision and now want others to pay for it? Especially when the non College educated laborers tend to be massively Republican (the majority who are against this). College is too expensive but kids do themselves no favors by going to overly expensive non elite private schools. You can blame the government but I blame parents for not better informing their children's decision and abdicating decision making to school (the state) which tells them to go where they want and take a loan. I say this as someone who is college educated.

Also what happens after? You just wipe the debt then everyone else can take more loans and get stuck with them or is all college even private ones magically going to become free via the government?

I don't understand what you mean by this. You said you paid your own tuition which is good, that's literally the expectation. I served in the military and mine were paid through my service. My disagreement was when you said this is what politicians were supposed to do. I addressed your claim and you didn't respond to it

Ultimately taxes are determined by income bracket and college graduates make more overall than those who didn't graduate college. So, college graduates are paying off their loans with their own taxes. The only reason there is any opposition to this is because right wing media wants to make Biden look bad every moment of every day, since republicans have no merits to run on.

There's opposition because if you took a loan you're supposed to pay it back. Why is your bad decision everyone else's problem. What you just described and advocated for is tyranny of the elite. I pay more so I get more of a say? First of all the majority of people don't have degrees and second of all the top 1% account for almost 50% of tax revenue... So should they control the government? Someone's academic and economic background should not dictate tax dollars. That's an extremely oligarchic thing to say. All votes and people are equal in the eyes of the constitution, not who contributes more in taxes. I know the left hates the constitution and bill of rights but that's supposed to be how it works.

Also what happens after you've still never addressed that. We wipe the loans then next year when some brain dead girl wants to study literature at BU for 80k a year, who pays for that? Now we resume loans like nothing happened or do we just literally subsidize these outrageously expensive private schools?

One problem is the predatory terms of the loan. Many people have already paid the amount they borrowed but still owe ~90% of it due to the way their interest and payments were calculated. If we the taxpayer just wanted our money back, that's already done for many of these cases and there is no longer anything to complain about - you're going to anyway, though, because really you just want christian nationalism and complaining about student loans seems like a path to getting it.

Another issue is the costs of college. Many argue that because public education ought to be free to everyone anyway it makes little sense to charge for it. And in fact tuitions aren't actually that high. The vast majority of student loans goes to landlords. If you want to argue that it shouldn't, I'm afraid you are way behind me on that road. But punishing the students further isn't a way to accomplish that.

And finally there is the idea that some of these professions are in high demand for the benefit of society , even if one can't expect particularly high pay. Mental health professionals, dentists, teachers, nurses.. these are all somewhat low paying jobs that we are in critical need of. It makes sense for society to alleviate what burdens we can for them.

State college is not that expensive, community college is affordable. Many countries that have free college average less than half our wages and are usually homogeneous non diverse societies. It makes things a lot simpler. The loan structure is predatory i agree but we've known this for a long time it's not a secret. I have 0 sympathy for someone who chooses a place like BU or BC at 80k a year for an education that is not worth it or for a wasted major without any actual career prospects and that is literally encouraged by your liberal elites.

Mental health is over blown. No society has ever been more mentally ill then today's and no society tells about it as much as today. Teachers are a scam that try to indoctrinate children by raising them based on liberal values who controls the public school system, any capable parent can homeschool via the many programs available. Dentists usually start out as a trade and almost all dental assistants are trades with a associate degree. Nurses make a lot of money and if they're smart about which school they pick they can pay it back quickly. None of this explains why they do not take responsibility for getting the loan and it becomes a shared responsibility. There are various ways to get free or far cheaper education. People just don't want to take accountability for their decisions. I didn't want to pay, I didn't want a loan and my family wouldn't pay, I joined the military and I have 2 degrees at 24 years old. Was it hard? Yes but it's not that fucking hard, people just want want want. There's 0 accountability or common sense in this society and you people run to the government to solve everything

Most private colleges in the North East "the best" education in the USA cost over $40k in tuition a year. Dorms are usually $11k-18k. Cheaper then most rents actually.

The fact of the matter is the government doesn't hold the actual debt; private equity firms do.
For them to cancel student debt would be like me owing you $100 on the government steps in and says no; debt is canceled.
The fact of the matter is it shouldn't be canceled anyways. If people chose to go to school they need to pay for it, no different than if someone bought a car they need to pay for that too. Pick your poison
