I do lolz. It's the 4th and the bar will be packed. I'd love to be out with friends but the money is too good to pass up on a busy holiday. Anyone else work holidays?
In my country you get holidays off. Well it differs by Kanton which is like a state in the US. Some days are national holidays and some are different in each state but you get a lot of days off. There are a lot of religious holidays in Switzerland and so some are just not important enough to warrant a day off but you still get plenty and most people get 5 weeks of holidays on top of that so in a good year when the holidays are in nice spots in the calendar you can make lots of 4 day weekends or just go on holidays for a few weeks but not use too many days of vacation time because some days are off anyway etc.

I worked a lot of holidays in my working career. As a junior employee. I would be forced to work most holidays. As a senior employee. I would volunteer to work to allow the younger ones to be home with their families.
Even though the younger ones didn’t appreciate the fact that I was doing them a favor until I pointed it out to them!24 Reply
It depends. Normally yes and especially before holidays. I normally have a weekly column but over the last years I did a special column for the main holidays. I do write these often a week in advance but because of this I rarely can prepare and do things in advance FOR the holiday. So additional work before holidays but because of this no time to do much more to have a free holiday. This is for longer holidays like Christmas or Easter, if its only one day I can easily decide to do it another day just not longer than a week.

+1 yWe have a lot of bank holidays here in the UK. People who work in offices, education etc. Get paid time off.
While I worked in the hospitality industry and retail, we work all the holidays apart from Christmas Day. If we want any holidays off we gotta book them off.
I think the minimum holiday we can book off and get paid for is 28 days. Some people get more or less depending on whether they work.01 Reply- +1 y

+1 yMy job gives most "major" holidays off. So we were off for the 4th. We are also off on holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Giving and Christmas. Some "holidays" we do have to work as they are not considered "observed holidays" by company standards.

Well, I'm glad it hasn't been too bad and you have some friends stopping in to have a drink!

+1 yNot any more. But when I was working on projects being installed or updated at customer sites, people in my group took turns working holidays. We had to make sure the system was working okay 24/7, including holidays. Often that was boring since nothing bad happened, but we had to be there, just in case.

+1 yI was working in a copper mine during the summer my early twenties while going to college. I was asked if I wouldn't mind working during the 4th of July. I started the first shift and it was a great day. As I was ready to leave for the day on my shift the boss came up and asked me if I would mind working a the afternoon shift I would be compensated with double time plus a steak dinner. Being young I said sure anything for a free meal. As my shift began to finish for the afternoon shift that's supervisor for that shift approached me and asked if I wouldn't mind working a third shift. I got triple time and a half. That was super. Love my body was feeling it when the end of that 24 hours was over with. But as I look at it I got a good paycheck for that pay period. Was it worth it as I look at it today not really.

+1 yI may have worked a 4th, but, I don't remember. I don't HAVE to work the 4th where i work, and in fact, they gave us the third as well. I also get to take another day off as well, I'm probably just going to take the 5th. So it's been a nice three day weekend, 5 if you include sat and Sunday

I could have worked today. I'd rather sleep
I don't have to now , but my entire life I worked while others were out partying , two fold benefit earning and not spending , in my roles it was vital anyhow , no such things as public holidays with the exception of a few.
Although in Australia we get 4 weeks annual leave not 2 , so I would bankroll this and not take until the projects hit the relevant timing.
10 ReplyUggggggggggg yes. 🥺😥😭
Did it a lot in the Navy because of my specific job, even when we theoretically had the day off.
Now, not so much although my company doesn't give us all the Federal holidays off. Today, though, I'm off.16 Replyno. Everyone is an independent person, we belong to ourselves first, we have thoughts, we have personality, rather than giving all of us to each other. We can have reservations, such as the privacy you don't want to say, and those who have secrets are mature, aren't they? Sometimes it's better not to say it.

A long time ago I worked in a store and the 4th of July was on a Saturday and it was celebrated on Monday. My boss said that it was the 4th of July on Saturday and we had to be open on Monday. So we all have to go into the store. The city was like a ghost town and we had zero customers. After we closed we went to the parking garage to get into our cars to go home. There were 4 of us. The garage was closed and there was a chain link gate keeping us out. So after wasting the whole day we could not get our cars out of garage jail. My boss wanted to call the cops but I figured it would be hours before we got our cars. I climbed over the fence and got my International Scout and parked it in front of the gate. I had a tow strap in it in case i got stuck on the beach. I fastened one end to the gate and the other to my front bumper. I put it in reverse and pulled the gate's anchors right out of the wall. We all Drove over the gate and went home.

I used to work for National Parks resorts and resorts. Full timers always worked holidays. Those were the best tip days. The regulars usually had for example Tuesday and Wednesday off and that was when the the real fun began.
