Whats it like to be a School Janitor?

I myself have been in janitorial and mantnance for 7 years for a private business until recently. I just acquired another janitorial position for a local public school and I start in a few days. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with janitorial and mantnance in the public school system and can give me an idea of what my days will be like. Thanks in advance for any input.

I teach kindergarten and the head custodian at my school is the absolute best!

The beginning and end of the year are the hardest for the maintenance crew at my school as they have to remove all the furniture from each classroom for cleaning, wax the floores, and then put all the furniture back. They fix things that broke and put things like shelves together. They help adjust the height of desks - they do so much! 🙂

Our custodians don't like it when admin makes teachers move their classrooms - as it falls on them to move all the boxes and furniture.

Day to day, they sweep and mop up the floor after lunch, vacuum carpeted areas after school, clean the bathrooms, shovel the snow from sidewalks and spread salt - I'm sure there's more and they are truly appreciated everyday.

They pace themselves it’s a county job when I was in school I’ve seen them work then they go around with a stick sharp end and pick up litter and vacuum the carpets in the library and things like that clean the bathrooms and they alternate. Then have their little hangout area. I did some work with them when I had my indoor suspension as a teenager.

I didn’t get paid. It was a part of my punishment for two or three days.

I don’t know what it’s like nowadays, but I remember everybody’s pretty laid-back and relaxed and laughed and talked, and they seem to take their time, they were in no rush. Or under stress
The workers. Even some of the teachers would come back there and talk to them. I actually prefer that for my punishment instead of sitting in one classroom all day doing homework.
