I know a woman who apparently thinks my IQ is 50-60 points lower then what it is. She is always leaving remarks during discussions that I consider to be unintentionally insulting.
Like she asked me if I wanted to return to my old sales post at the big company and I said, no, because I had a job, my job was that I was a professional writer. And her response was, “you can write and do sales too, a lot of people have two jobs.”
Its like she thinks my writing job is a joke, and I won’t sell any copies. It’s also like she thinks I’m too stupid to get jobs at other companies. Another time, she seemed to have suggested I worked cause I was desperate for spending money. There were plenty of things I could have done that paid twice as much, I just enjoyed my job because it opened up a new industry for me that had infinite room for growth and skill development.

Before getting offended, I would ask myself if any of her suggestions are valid. I would ask myself if I had made any money from writing. If not, am I more apt to make money from writing in the next six months than I have since becoming an author? If not, her suggestion of getting a second, paying, job is not unreasonable. I know how this goes. I’m starting a business. If the business hadn’t gotten its first contract recently I would have to find other work.
