I work part time at a theater and the other day my boss asked me about my availability for the month of December for the Christmas show?

and I just recently found out when I’m going to Bethlehem, PA and the next day going to my nieces christening and when I told my boss I wasn’t able to work during the month of December she wished she would of known earlier and told me that we depend on our employees, but I only just found out about both of those events right before she texted me. I understand her point of view regarding having enough staff for the Christmas shows and why she needed to have known ahead of time but I also feel like I can’t have a life outside of work and I was wondering if it seems that way?

That's tricky. I can see both sides for sure. Your boss needs time to find coverage if people can't work, so it makes sense she's bummed you just told her now about December plans.

At the same time though, life happens last minute sometimes and it ain't like you're trying to bail on her on purpose. Family stuff and events coming up shouldn't mean you can't have any free time outside work too.

Maybe explain to her real nice like that you just found out about it all yourself recently. Say you'll help find someone to cover your shifts if possible too, just so she knows you still wanna help out where you can.

If she's chill she'll understand plans change. As long as you're not missing shifts all the time last second she shouldn't give you too hard a time I don't think.

Just play it cool and see if you guys can work something out together. Compromise is key. Hopefully she comes around once she knows you’re not just flaking on purpose. Good luck!
