Is calling out of work for Christmas irresponsible of me?

I got scheduled to work on Christmas Eve (why even keep a retail store open on Christmas Eve?) from 1-6:30pm.
Most people are having family gatherings around that time, myself included.
I have a family gathering that starts at 5 and will probably be over by 6:30. No, they can't reschedule our gathering. So I'm calling out of work, is that justifiable?
It's not like a lot people are going to be shopping on Christmas Eve so I doubt they'll be busy...

I wouldn’t worry too much about it only because I’ve worked retail on Christmas Eve and it’s ridiculous only because the customers are mad that you’re sold out of something when they left their shopping to the very last minute and then, even with hours up until 6:00, people come in at 5:50 expecting to do all their shopping. Retail managers treat their employees horribly and have no problem reminding employees that they’re replaceable when they ask for more money so I say go ahead and call out on Christmas Eve because your family is much more important.

I got yelled at while working retail for calling out sick when I was actually sick so I am a little biased. 😉

I'd talk to your boss about this and see if they can reschedule you. Just calling in is disrespectful of your boss, your store and your customers. What if everyone just didn't come in? It could also get you disciplined and maybe fired.

I wouldn't do that because I don't have a family. However, if that is not going to cost your job then I would say go forward.

100%. Some employers try to shame their employees into staying, but you don't have to. Nor do you need permission. You are just letting them know you won't be available at that time

I use to think work was so important and that it was my duty to be loyal to the company’s demands. Not anymore. No job is worth have a life that dictated for the almighty dollar.
