Why did my manager try to ruin my reputation when I did nothing wrong?

I worked in a call centre for 18 months. I seemed to settle into the job well and I passed probation.

When I got my new manager, she didn’t support me, she never gave me good feedback or constructive feedback, only criticism. I used to get really positive feedback from customers, they said that I was really helpful and knowledgable and gave great customer service. When my manager would read customer feedback to me, she only read out one positive review and read out all the negative ones to me. I am a well educated person and I got a masters degree but my manager kept me out of the loop about progression opportunities. I even asked my manager if there were any progression opportunities but she changed the subject.

I went off sick for stress from the job and every time I got back she would say to me “I don’t think you are capable of doing this job”. She was very reluctant about letting me have time off and threatened my job if I took extra time off, saying ‘if you take this time off, we’ll be having a very different conversation when you get back.’

When I got back from my holiday, I was suspended from work and pending investigation for “gross misconduct”. I was told My manager had built up a case against me whilst I was off work and found the tiniest flaws in my work to get me suspended. She made me cry in my misconduct meetings, she raised her voice at me and kept interrupting me so I couldn’t get a word in edgeways. She accused me of not having empathy on the phone to customers and not having adequate supervision. I cried in the meeting and said ‘I can’t go through with this anymore’ and she said ‘this interview or the job?’ She also threatened to report me to my professional body so this would ruin my career. After I resigned she continued an internal investigation. The outcome of the investigation that no adverse findings were made against me, so the whole investigation seemed so pointless.

Why did she try to ruin my reputation when I did nothing wrong?

Dang, that manager sounds like a total bitch. Some people just get off on power tripping over others. A few thoughts on why she tried to mess with you:

- Jealousy - You said you had a masters, so you were probably smarter than her. That threatened her little position of power.

- Insecure - Managers take it personal when their staff are well liked by customers. She had to put you down to make herself feel big.

- Control issues - Trying to micromanage you and limit your growth kept you under her thumb. Fragile ego couldn't handle you advancing.

- Sabotage - Building a fake case against you made her feel important. Some people are just miserable and drag others down with them.

- No life - Sad ass probably didn't have shit else going on but harass employees at work. Pathetic excuse for a manager.

Fuck that noise. You're clearly talented to have done so well despite her bullshit attempts to hold you back. Hope you find another gig with people who appreciate you for real. Never let lame ass people make you question yourself!
