Do you like to collect proverbs from around the world?

I was watching a YouTube video on African proverbs years ago and one of the proverbs said

"Not everyone who chased the gazelle caught the gazelle but those who caught the gazelle chased the gazelle."

Meaning there is no guarantee you will succeed if you endeavour at something but if you don't try at all, you are guaranteed to fail and if you try there is a chance you will fail but there is also a chance you will succeed.

I took a gamble by choosing self employment rather than a professional career, or even a functional career like a McDonalds burger maker etc... I could become filthy rich or I could fall flat on my face with nothing at all to show for my time investment in what I do.

I wouldn't say I collect proverbs but I do enjoy unpacking statements that require some intellectual self reflection. Here's one of my favorites, it's actually from a scifi show.

"If you immediately know the candle light is fire, then the meal was cooked a long time ago"

The meaning of which, depending on how YOU interpret it, you had the ability to answer the question yourself all along but didn't recognize it despite it being obvious to the face. Like wanting to cook a meal and looking to start your fire with out a matches or a stove but your light source was the spark you needed to come to your own conclusion.

Proverbs or sayings that provoke self reflection. Like this are what I like to hold on to in my self development. Molding the way how I deal with people and life. Jordan Peterson, who's concidered so controversial but really isn't if people just listen to him rather than about him and/or out of context clips, says a lot of things that I think people need to hear. Maybe it's because the things JP says invokes a certain amount of personal responsibilities that isn't palatable to some or many.

Not everyone is a Bible thumper which is fine, I'm not, but too many dismiss it's story contained wisdom on how are relationships to each other could or should be. People rather dismiss religion all together because that means they have responsibility outside of themselves whether they recognize that or not. Whether you believe in God or not doesn't mean such writings like the literal book of Proverbs should be dismissed.

Okay now I'm feeling like JP so I'll leave it there. But suffice to say, I enjoy the proverbs and sayings whether it be out of artwork, movies, books, video games, musical lyrics, or any other medium that invoke a little self reflection. Anything that challenges yourself is how we grow to be better people.
