Which situation would you prefer?

If you had to choose one

Living in a big, exciting city with high cost of living and barely making ends meet

Living in a small town with low cost of living and being able to save money

That's backwards. All the money is in cities. Out in the country can be very difficult to make money. Decent paying jobs can be very hard to come by. It's the main reason why there has been a mass migration to cities. The towns that do have some decent paying jobs tend to have all their eggs in one basket. They commonly have one company that pays halfway decent. If something happens to that company the entire town can be screwed. Decent paying is relative since it still won't pay nearly as well as the cities.

This is becoming even more true with a technology and financial based economy. You'd be hard pressed to find tech or big financial companies in small towns. There was a short lived trend in the 80s of tech companies opening branches in small towns. They did well and there was no shortage of employees willing to move there. But for some reason that trend didn't last. In the country I have worked for a quarter of minimum wage before, because that was the best thing going.

I would prefer to live in the country or a small town. But for the above reasons I've lived most of my life in cities - as far toward the edge of the city as possible.

I've never enjoyed the big city life. I'd prefer to live in a small town even if I had to pay the same as in the city.

Just a bit further beyond the suburbs so the big city is still very accessible in case I/we need something from the metropolis.

I grew up in big cities, and I will never go back now. Small towns are so much more relaxing.
