Are employees still allowed to take smoke breaks in your workplace?

I used to have a job scooping ice cream as a teenager, and on my ACTUAL break, I would go out to my car and smoke weed, and get high as FUCK, lmao. And the one time someone tried to step to me about it, I was like “Dale…. I do a great job for you here, the customers love me, the money’s always right. All of your waitresses and cooks are dipping out for a cigarette AT LEAST once an hour. That’s probably an hour of down time per employee, per shift. If I only use part of my OFFICIAL mandated break time to get blazed, and it doesn’t affect my work, you should be REAL satisfied with that.” No counter-argument was given.

We got a new manager one time who was the owner’s brother. The brother was talking to me early on, and he said he had gone fishing with the owner while they talked about the idea of him coming on. He goes “Gary told me all about you. He said “We’ve got this kid Steve…he’s GREAT. Punctual, reliable, amazing with customers, keeps a very tidy station, absolute pro, he’s been with us for years…. but the kid is HIGH on DRUGS, ALL THE TIME!””😂😂😂 So it was just a known thing that I was a high-functioning stoner, lmao, and they just let me rock. I fucked with those guys👍

But yeah, I kind of always resented the smokers at work because they had some apparent built-in excuse for more frequent breaks than they were entitled to, and we non-smokers were left to be working the whole time.

Side-note: the parents were who I REALLY resented. They’d always cause scheduling problems by calling out because their kid was sick, or they had something to do for them, “something came up”…. and sometimes I questioned if it was even true and they just didn’t feel Iike working that day. It was never “something came up” for the Saturday night bartending shift when hundreds of dollars of tips were on the table, lmao, only Tuesday afternoon when they knew it wouldn’t be lucrative🙄 But anyway…. next job I have, I think I’ll lie and say I have a small kid, find some fake pictures to show people, lmao, and then I’ll be able to call in sick without reprimand too😂 Might claim to be Jewish while I’m at it, score a couple extra days off😂😂😂

1. more and more people are quiting smoking
2. smoke breaks became coffee breaks
3. all employees in Ontario, Canada get the same number of breaks depending on the number of hours worked
