Can someone who is ugly work as software engineer?

I ask this question, because some recruiters said my face was too ugly to give presentations to stakeholders, during interviews. I was presentable and clean, with make up, but I have an unfortunate bone structure.

Does it matter how our face looks like if we want to work as software engineer?

Yes, they can. While there was a period of time over the last 6-7 years where women and minorities could get hired for DEI reasons, that's mostly been done away with because companies that did so have lots tons of money as a result of that, and things have gone back to (for the most part) hiring based on merit - talent, skills, experience, and hard work. What you look like isn't particularly important, as long as you can do the work as well or better than everyone else.

Of course, while being a software engineer isn't a PHYSICALLY difficult job, it's still not an easy one, with long hours and late nights being the norm, and lots of people competing for the same positions and promotions. It's not the kind of job you can coast through - at least, not anymore. Just be prepared for that, and you'll be fine.

You might not be the person who does the PR, but if you have talent and work hard, you will get work. Most software engineers are locked away in a dark room for months at a time anyway.
